Recovering Self-Harm Data to Prevent Suicide

Self-harming behavior is a major risk factor and predictor of suicide.

In a recent article published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, informaticians applied a machine learning model to recover unrecorded self-harm events of people with major mental illness (MMI).

What did they discover? Male individuals and seniors with MMI are particularly vulnerable to self-harm undercoding in health records and may be at risk of not getting appropriate psychiatric care.

Why Informatics? So, we can utilize machine learning to prevent suicide in people living with major mental illness and history of self-harm.
