48 million cases of foodborne-related illnesses occur each year in the U.S., and more than half are restaurant related. Foodborne illnesses remain a major public health concern, but identifying the cause of these outbreaks is challenging.

That is why informaticians recently explored ways social media and crowd-sourced apps can track real-time incidents that might otherwise go unreported.

In a recent article published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, researchers share how to surveil and detect foodborne illnesses by using the popular website and app Yelp.
