Bringing Expedited Care to Social Security Applicants with Disabilities

Thousands of patients die every year in the United States waiting for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration. In a published Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association article, authors Kenneth Abbott, Yen-Yi Ho, PhD and Jennifer Erickson outline how using electronic health records can improve vitality among critically ill Social Security disability applicants.

How was this solved? By using software to analyze annotations of unstructured patient records, informaticians identified how care teams can prioritize patients who need immediate care.

Why Informatics? So, we can create new care methods to reveal who needs our help most.
