AMIA Welcomes New AHRQ Director Khanna

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

The following statement was released today by Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, PhD, FACP, FACMI, President and CEO, American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)

AMIA welcomes Mr. Gopal Khanna as the new Director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Given his background as Minnesota’s first statewide Chief Information Officer and his more recent post developing a statewide Healthcare & Human Services Innovation Incubator (HHSi2) for Illinois, we are confident Mr. Khanna will provide important strategic direction to AHRQ and its research portfolio.

AMIA looks forward to working with Director Khanna to ensure that the important informatics research AHRQ funds remains core to its mission “to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable.”  As our healthcare system continues its march towards digitization, it is critical for AHRQ to receive continued support by Congress, buttressed by continued leadership within HHS.  While we appreciate Congressional acknowledgement of AHRQ’s importance in the FY17 appropriations bill signed by the President last week, we urge Congress to increase AHRQ funding in FY18, signaling their continued commitment to improving our nation’s health and care delivery system.

AHRQ plays a vital role in developing evidence that is understood and used by clinicians across the country, and AMIA stands ready to help Mr. Khanna leverage health informatics to discover health insights and accelerate healthcare transformation.
