On August 16, the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) announced a policy change, reducing the burden for diplomates recertifying in Clinical Informatics (CI). Effective January 1, 2019, CI diplomates certified by the ABPM will no longer be required to maintain their primary certification in order to recertify in their subspecialty.

“AMIA applauds ABPM for this announcement,” said Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, PhD, FACP, FACMI. “This policy change will make it easier to recognize Clinical Informatics as an area of expertise in its own right and enhance the ability for CI diplomates to maintain their certification in Clinical Informatics. AMIA will continue to work with ABPM and others to ensure MOC requirements are focused on activities that matter to the professional growth of Clinical Informatics diplomates and contribute to the broad field of health informatics.”
