Special Course offered with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, AMIA, and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) are pleased to offer this special version of the 10x10 course aimed at registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition and dietetic technicians, registered (NDTRs). The content is tailored to nutrition and the live session takes place at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo™.

The overarching goal of the 10x10 program aims to offer introductory training to build a workforce that will embrace information technology to improve the quality, safety, and cost-effectiveness of healthcare and public health. Since the program was launched in 2005, over 3,000 people, mostly from the US but also from a variety of international locations, have completed the course. About 20% of those graduating have gone on to advanced study in the field. The Nutrition focused 10x10 has graduated 129 students in six offerings of the course.

The benefits the AMIA-OHSU 10x10 program provides are as follows:

  • Detailed overview of biomedical and health informatics to those who will work at the interface of healthcare and information technology.
  • Entry point for those wishing further study and career advancement in the field.
  • Broad understanding of the field from the vantage point of those who implement, lead, and develop IT solutions for improving health, healthcare, public health, and biomedical research.
  • Up-to-date details on current events in the field, including the "meaningful use" of electronic health records specified by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA, also known as the US economic stimulus package).

Course Director

William Hersh, MDDr. William Hersh, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology in the School of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, serves as the Director of the OHSU 10x10 offering. Dr. Hersh has been at OHSU since 1990, where he developed research and educational programs in medical informatics. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to the field. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.  Dr. Hersh also maintains the Informatics Professor Blog.

William Hersh, MDPeggy R. Turner, MS, RD/LD, FAND
Peggy Turner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. She earned her bachelors in Nutritional Sciences in 1997 and Masters in Nutritional Sciences in 2004. Her research centers around the use of technology and interprofessional practice within the dietetic profession.

Marty Yadrick is Director of Nutrition Informatics for Computrition, Inc.  His graduate degrees include a Master of Biomedical Informatics from Oregon Health & Science University.  He is a former President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is currently Chair-Elect of the Academy’s Foundation.

Lindsey Hoggle is Director of Nutrition Informatics at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, where she advocates for nutrition inclusion in health IT implementations, standards, and regulations.
