What is a Podcast?
Simply put, a podcast is just an audio file that is made available to an audio player. This player may be your computer or a standalone device such as an iPod. Now that we know where the "pod" comes from in podcasting, how does "casting" fit in? The audio file is advertised to the world by being added to a list. When this list is read by a data reader (e.g. iTunes), the reader knows if this audio file has been downloaded before. It is similar to broadcasting a radio or television show.
The audio file is in an MP3 format and the advertising data file is in an RSS format so the data file is called an RSS Feed. When read by the RSS Reader (data reader), the software will automatically check for updates and download the files to your computer. You can then play them on your computer or load them onto your MP3 player. For more information on podcasting, check out the Podcasting Resources below.
The same principals apply to video files.
