Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to welcome you to our second issue of AMIA's Standard Standard, an online publication that aims to inform you about the latest news and developments in the world of health informatics standardization.

In this issue, you will find articles on the following topics:

A summary of a new report about to be published by the European Commission, produced by the CALLIOPE project, defining a roadmap for the future success of health informatics standards. Although targeted to the EU, this report is pertinent to standardization across the globe.

A new initiative and publications from CDISC help advance the quality of care and potential for research in Alzheimer's Disease.

A report of a recent trans-Atlantic summit hosted by AMIA in Washington, DC, that explored critical barriers to successful adoption and use of health informatics solutions, and shared experiences and strategies between the United States and European Union.

Our Editorial Board has contributed to this issue's considerable news and updates from many leading international standardization bodies.

We are very keen to make this outreach tool a two-way channel, so that we can receive input from you about your needs and challenges and collect feedback about what should be fed into future standardization activities. Our new issue, sporting the new AMIA logo within an attractive web design framework now facilitates your posting of comments on individual articles or letters to the Editor.

Thank you to Nancy Light and her team for designing and producing this issue and for managing the Standard’s web presence. Thank you to my Editorial Board for their support and their contributions to this issue, and to our feature authors.

I hope that you will enjoy reading this issue, and look forward to receiving your comments.

With best wishes,

Dipak Kalra
