  • Researchers Create Powerful New Method To Analyze Genetic Data

    University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston researchers have developed a powerful visual analytical approach to explore genetic data, enabling scientists to identify novel patterns of information that could be crucial to human health.

    The method, which combines three different "bipartite visual representations" of genetic information, is described in an article to appear in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. The work won a distinguished paper award when it was presented at the AMIA Summit on Translational Bioinformatics in March 2012.

  • Demographics, not practice setting, predict doctor tech use

    To find which physicians are most active on social media and other places online, one study says don’t look at the doctor’s specialty or practice setting.

    The most consistent predictors of whether physicians used seven Internet-based communication technologies was whether the doctors were young, male and had teaching hospital privileges, according to a study posted online May 25 on the website of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Barriers to implementing this feature exist, but they are not well understood," scientists in Washington, District of Columbia report (see also Science).

    Last week, I had the opportunity to participate in a ceremony at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcing their Public Health Informatics Fellowship being recognized as a Registered Apprenticeship by the Department of Labor (DOL). This potentially sets the stage for public health informaticians to become a DOL standard occupational code, which means they would appear in DOL labor statistics.
