  • American College of Surgeons Welcomes AMIA Leader to New Post

    Don E. Detmer, MD, FACMI, who most recently held the position of AMIA Senior Advisor and served as AMIA President and CEO from 2004–2009, has been named Medical Director of the Advocacy and Health Policy Division at the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Last fall, in recognition of his longstanding efforts to advance the field of biomedical and health informatics, Dr. Detmer received AMIA’s highest honor, the prestigious Morris F. Collen Award.

    The 24th IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems (CBMS) will be held in Bristol, UK, June 27-30. CBMS is accepting paper submissions until April 20. ACMI Fellow Jonathan C. Silverstein, MD, MS, FACS, also Vice President and Clinical Research Informatics Head at the Center for Clinical and Research Informatics (CCRI) Research Institute, NorthShore University HealthSystem, is one of the General Chairs of the symposium.   • AMIA Member Leads Important European Meeting

    Dr. AartsJos Aarts, PhD, Senior Research Scientist at the Institute of Health Policy and Management, and chair of AMIA’s People & Organizational Issues Working Group, has been named Chair of the Scientific Program Committee of the 23rd Medical Informatics Europe (MIE2011) conference to be held in Oslo, Norway, Aug. 28-31.

  • Former AMIA Board Member Joins Siemens as CMIO

    AMIA member J. Marc Overhage, MD, PhD, FACMI, was appointed Chief Medical Informatics Officer of the Siemens Health Services business unit. In this position, Dr. Overhage will be responsible for clinical informatics and for advising on long-term product strategies. Before being hired by Siemens, Dr. Overhage founded the Indiana Health Information Exchange where he serves as president and CEO. He's also the Director of medical informatics at the Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis. Dr. Overhage will start his new position March 28.
