2012 European Summit on Trustworthy Reuse of Health Data
Don Detmer, MD, past President and CEO of AMIA, was a keynote speaker at the
2012 European Summit on Trustworthy Reuse of Health Data, Brussels, Belgium, May 14–15.
Dr. Detmer spoke on National Policy for Reuse of Person-specific Health Data: A perspective from the United States. The proceedings were co-chaired by
Steven E. Labkoff, MD, Head, Strategic Programs, Research & Development Information at AstraZeneca; and AMIA Finance and Investment Committee Chair, and
Charles Safran, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and past President and Chairman of AMIA.
The format of the event, and future activity, is based in similar work lead by AMIA in the USA, which resulted in a data stewardship framework that was later vetted at the National Committee for Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS), a Health and Human Services (HHS) advisory committee. The invitation only event for 100+ attendees was hosted by
IMIA, the International Medical Informatics Association.

Informatics Programs Thriving and Increased Hiring Expected

The
6th Annual Academic Forum was held May 24 at the Westin Hotel in Minneapolis. The 48 attendees represented 33 programs and three interested organizations. An informal survey found that participants were enrolling approximately 3,000 students in total and were intending on hiring almost 60 new faculty in the coming year for the programs represented at the meeting. AMIA CEO and President, Dr. Kevin Fickenscher attended the meeting to listen, learn and share his philosophy about leading the organization. The group had passionate discussions about what is and what is not informatics sparked by the reports from the
Advanced Interprofessional Informatics Certification task force and the subspecialty program accreditation preparation task force and other presentations.
“We had superb presentations and discussions about working with private industry partners, how we relate to other health professions schools, the national landscape and the factors that will influence our programs in the near future. We have a superb report on descriptive statistics of your program revealing, once again, their diversity,” said AMIA Academic Forum Chair,
Stuart M. Speedie, PhD. Professor Speedie is a Fellow, Director of Graduate Studies and Co-Director, Institute for Health Informatics, University of Minnesota.

Dr. Michael Shabot Represents AMIA at CMS’s National Priorities Partnership and Partnership for Patients

Last year AMIA was selected to represent the biomedical informatics community on the
National Priorities Partnership (NPP), a multi-stakeholder group created by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to provide annual input to the Department of Health and Human Services on the development of a National Quality Strategy. The
NPP is a collaborative effort of more than 50 major national organizations, bringing together public and private-sector stakeholder groups in a collaborative forum to help achieve the aims of better care, more affordable care and healthy people and communities. Two major goals have already been established: (1) Improving maternity care and (2) reducing readmissions.
The
Partnership for Patients (PfP), formally announced in April 2011, is a public-private partnership aimed at improving health care quality under the Affordable Care Act. This Partnership brings together hospitals, stakeholder leaders, patient advocates and state and federal governments in a shared effort to make hospital care safer, more reliable and less costly. Hospital Engagement Networks (HENS) were created to engage hospitals into the Partnership and so far over 4,100 hospitals are participating. To reach the goals of this initiative, HHS requested that NQF convene the NPP for periodic meetings to identify opportunities for public-private sector collaboration to advance the aims of the Partnership.
Dr. M. Michael Shabot is AMIA’s representative to PfP and Meryl Bloomrosen, AMIA’s Vice President for Policy, provides lead staff support. He will periodically share information about these activities and may seek AMIA member input to assure AMIA’s ongoing and active participation in these two initiatives. We especially want to hear from members with expertise and “on the ground” experience in patient safety and quality of care efforts. In the short term we seek information, research and case studies about: improving maternal quality of care and reducing readmissions.
