NIST Taps AMIA Members to Assist with Usability Workshop

The National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) hosted a workshop on May 22 designing EHRs with a user-centered approach.NIST reached out to AMIA and its members for technical assistance with the program. AMIA Academic Forum Sixth Annual Conference

Academic Forum Annual ConferenceThe 6th Annual AMIA Academic Forum Conference kicks-off May 23-24 in Minneapolis. Topics covered include The Industry Perspective on Biomedical and Health Informatics Training–Models for Academic-Industry Collaboration; Engaging with Health Professions Schools; Policy Action for BMI Education; Basic Statistics Report; and Innovations in Informatics Education. Fifty participants are expected at the host site, the University of Minnesota Institute for Health Informatics.

AMIA Submits Comments About ICD-10 Delay

AMIA submitted comments in response to the proposed rule to delay ICD-10 Implementation. While AMIA noted its acceptance of the delay, DHHS was urged to undertake a number of activities to address known implementation challenges and stakeholder concerns. ICD-10 addresses Administrative Simplification: Adoption of a Standard for a Unique Health Plan Identifier; Addition to the National Provider Identifier Requirements; and a Change to the Compliance Date for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Medical Data Code Sets.

Patient Safety and HIT 10x10 Virtual Course

Held in partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago, Patient Safety and HIT begins May 25 and there is still time to register. The course follows the success of 2011’s UIC 10x10 offering that focused on HIT and electronic health records systems through the lens of the 2009 federal stimulus package.

Patient Safety and HIT10x10 focuses on implications to patient safety as the nation successfully implements the EHR in its inpatient, ambulatory and physician office sites.
