AMIA is currently exhibiting at this year’s AMSA Annual Convention, March 8-10, at the Hyatt Regency Houston. Representatives from UT Houston’s Informatics program will be joining us to talk to some of AMSA’s more than 1,000 medical student attendees about AMIA’s programs and about the field of informatics. AMIA invites all members to review and provide input on the ONC’s recently released proposed rule on EHR certification, and CMS’ companion to the proposed rule on stage 2 of the meaningful use EHR incentive program. Once the proposed rules are published in the Federal Register (expected to occur around March 7), AMIA will have 60 days to submit comments.

If you are interested in participating and offering your feedback on one or both proposed rules, please contact Meryl Bloomrosen at meryl@amia.org before March 12. Please put “Meaningful Use Stage 2 Comments" in the subject line of your e-mail to Meryl.

JAMIA AMIA is at its best when its talented members come together for a common purpose. This occurred in May 2011 when nearly 300 public health informatics professionals converged in Orlando, Florida to discuss and articulate an informatics agenda for public health. The Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA) has published the summarized recommendations from the conference. The AMIA Board of Directors would like to thank AMIA members and other attendees who participated at PHI 2011, the Scientific Program and Advisory Committees who directed the conference, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation who supported the activity. The full text version of the paper is available on the JAMIA site.

JAMIA thanks its editorial board for helping to make the review process faster (the median time for the first decision on a manuscript is below 30 days). The nearly 70 percent increase in submissions in 2011, due in part to diversification of JAMIA contents, also represents the globalization of informatics. To enhance an already impressive set of experts, and to expand the set of institutions and nations represented in the editorial board, JAMIA welcomes the following new editorial board members:

  • Michael Becich, MD, PhD (University of Pittsburgh, USA)
  • Ricardo Bellazzi, PhD (University of Pavia, Italy)
  • Ju Han Kim, MD, PhD (Seoul National University, Korea)
  • Michio Kimura, MD, PhD (Hamamatsu University, Japan)
  • Yu-Chuan (Jack) Li, MD, PhD (Taipei Medical University, Taiwan)
  • Victor Maojo, PhD (Politechnic University of Madrid, Spain)
  • Stuart Speedie, PhD (University of Minnesota, USA)
  • Jeremy Wyatt, PhD (University of Warwick, UK)

In addition, Michael Chiang, MD (Oregon Health Sciences University, USA), was appointed Assistant Editor and will coordinate all activities related to the Student Editorial Board.

AMIA’s LinkedIn Group has reached 4,000 members! Join us on LinkedIn and communicate with your peers about trends, ideas and career opportunities. We're listed as the “Official Group of the American Medical Informatics Association.”
