The AMIA Board of Directors appointed Kevin Fickenscher, MD, as President and Chief Executive Officer. Fickenscher replaces Ted Shortliffe, MD, PhD, a leading expert in the field of informatics, who announced his decision to step down from the position several months ago. "I am very excited to let you know that Kevin Fickenscher, MD, will be joining AMIA on 3/19/2012 and on 4/1/2012, following a 2-week transition, will officially take on the role of President and CEO,” said Gilad Kuperman, MD, PhD, Chairman of the AMIA Board of Directors.
 
“We are very fortunate to have someone of Kevin Fickenscher’s caliber and experience to join AMIA,” Kuperman said. “We are at a transformative stage in the development of the association, where leadership that combines the professional knowledge of informatics with strong business skills and an understanding of the diverse healthcare and scientific environment is critical. Kevin is a national and international healthcare thought leader with a proven track record in academic, healthcare delivery and corporate organizations.”

AMIA 2012 Manuscript, proposals and abstract submissions are due Thursday, March 15 (TODAY!) by 11:59 p.m. (EDT). The AMIA 2012 Annual Symposium will be held Nov. 3-7, in Chicago. Full details and a submission template are located on the AMIA 2012 website.
 
 
 
 

 
10x10 The OHSU 10x10 course, which begins March 28, will provide introductory training to build the workforce that will enable clinically motivated use of IT to improve the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of healthcare and public health. The goal of the virtual course is to provide a detailed overview of biomedical and health informatics to those who will work at the interface of healthcare and information technology (IT). It provides an understanding of the field from the vantage point of those who implement, lead and develop IT solutions for improving health, healthcare, public health and biomedical research.
 
Also, registration is open for the University of Minnesota School of Nursing 10x10 course, the only 10x10 that specializes in Nursing Informatics. Class begins April 9.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a call for eHealth Solutions for the Compendium series, which was initiated to encourage a dialogue among stakeholders and to stimulate further development and technology dissemination. The Compendium is designed to help developing countries become aware of appropriate health technologies and eHealth solutions in support of their environment. NLM and NIBIB Workshop on "Natural Language Processing: State of the Art, Future, Directions and Applications for Enhancing Clinical Decision-Making"
 
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) is holding a workshop on “Natural Language Processing: State of the Art, Future Directions and Applications for Enhancing Clinical Decision-Making,” April 23-24, at Lister Hill Auditorium on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, MD. The IOM Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education aims to apply an ongoing, multi-national, multi-disciplinary approach to exploring promising innovations in the health education. The Forum will provide an ongoing, innovative mechanism to cultivate new ideas through global, multi-disciplinary collaboratives, which represent formal partnerships between university-based health institutions. The four innovation collaboratives are located in Canada, India, South Africa, and Uganda. 
 

 
The National Quality Forum (NQF) released its Health IT Knowledge Base to provide answers to some of the most common technical questions surrounding its health IT initiatives, including the Quality Data Model, the Measure Authoring Tool and eMeasures. The Knowledge Base specifically addresses questions that health IT stakeholders have posed to NQF on topics such as the structure and function of the Quality Data Model; features and functions of the Measure Authoring Tool; and standardization and implementation of eMeasures.
 

 
 
The Department of Veterans Affairs created, “Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent” (OSEHRA), a non-profit organization to accelerate EHR innovations, to develop open and accessible standards, and to establish a new model for federal software development and procurement. Seeded by an initial contribution of VA’s VistA EHR software, the community is actively engaged in advancing VistA-based EHRs, supporting joint EHR development between VA and DOD, plus promoting and supporting EHR software and related technology throughout the healthcare industry.

The “AMIA KR+S WG Webinar Series on Standard Biomedical Terminologies” begins Tuesday, March 20, with a session led by Dr. Daniel J. Vreeman, of the Regenstrief Institute. The session, titled LOINC: An Introduction to the Universal Catalog of Laboratory and Clinical Observations, is the first in a series of four webinars designed to help professional learn more about biomedical terminology standards, including ICD-10-CM, LOINC, RxNorm and SNOMED. The domain experts from the National Library of Medicine, the National Center for Health Statistics and the Regenstrief Institute will present principles, practicalities and recent developments of these terminologies, particularly in the context of meaningful use, certified EHRs, data exchange and so on.
