JAMIA, AMIA’s bimonthly journal on informatics in biomedicine and health, premiered the first of its FREE monthly webinars last week with nearly 150 participants from universities and organizations around the nation, as well as participants from Australia and Canada. The first Club article, presented by author George Hripcsak, was “Use of Electronic Clinical Documentation: Time Spent and Team Interactions.” As the webinar concluded, one satisfied student exclaimed, “This is such a great resource for getting the latest research out and in front of the eyes and into the minds of people who need to know it!!”

Mark your calendar for the next Journal Club webinar on Thurs., July 7, at 3 p.m. ET. Jyotishman Pathak, PhD, will present, “Mapping Clinical Phenotype Data Elements to Standardized Metadata Repositories and Controlled Terminologies: the eMERGE Network Experience.”

CME credit is available for this activity. For more information, click here.

AMIA submitted comments this week on the proposed rule from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on the Medicare Shared Savings Program: Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). In his overview of AMIA’s comments, President and CEO Ted Shortliffe asserts that ACOs, have the potential for achieving needed health care delivery and system reforms-- especially as enabled by informatics and by tools such as health IT. However, Dr. Shortliffe also enumerated a number of AMIA's concerns with the proposed rule, including the high initial health IT investment, IT governance/integration, methods of data submission, and data sharing. The planning committee for the upcoming World Health Organization’s Bulletin has issued a call for papers on establishing an evidence base for e-health. The Bulletin is one of the world's leading public health peer-reviewed journals, focusing on developing countries. GHIP (AMIA’s Global Health Informatics Partnership) is on the committee for this publication. Papers are welcome from a wide variety of settings but are particularly interested in papers that document evidence of impact of informatics in low-resource settings. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 20, 2011. For more information, click here.

ACMI Fellow Russ B. Altman, MD, PhD, professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, and colleagues discovered a dangerous side effect of a common drug combination through the use of translational bioinformatics research. By data mining, Dr. Altman found that the widely used combination of Paxil and Pravachol may cause unexpected increases in blood glucose levels. The researchers speculate that between 500,000 and 1 million people in this country may be affected. To read more, click here

Dr. Altman is also the course director for the Stanford University 10x10 course, beginning June 21.
