AMIA Board Chair participates in White House Meeting on
HIEs, Usability, CDSS and Workforce

On June 19, AMIA Board Chair,
Gil Kuperman, MD, attended a special White House meeting, “Discussion on Health Information Technology and Improving Care Quality and Patient Health.” The 200 invite-only attendees represented a cross-section of the healthcare field and included physicians, providers, vendors and government officials.
Dr. Kuperman commented, “It is clear ONC is seeking to identify the real world challenges and the effective solutions to EHR implementation. The comments were especially insightful and a lot of time was spent on HIE. There are lots of models out there. Paying for outcomes will help to accelerate progress, as will having rules of the road for privacy and trust.There is a sincere interest on the part of ONC to know what has been accomplished, what challenges remain and what local lessons have been learned that could be promulgated throughout the system. We don’t have a systematic way to share these lessons. If everyone knew what everybody else knew, we’d have many of these problems solved.”
The meeting featured brief remarks by panelists and an open group discussion. Panelists included Farzad Mostashari, MD, ScM, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology; Ted Chan, MD Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, Medical Director, US San Diego Hillcrest and La Jolla Medical Centers; Greg Wolverton, FHIMSS, CIO, ARCare; and Mike Zaroukian, MD, Vice President and CMIO, Sparrow Health System, Professor of Medicine, Michigan State University. Opening and closing remarks were offered by Cecilia Munoz, Director White House Domestic Policy Council and Liz Fowler, Special Assistant to the President for Healthcare & Economic Policy, White House National Economic Council, respectively.
Other AMIA members present at the meeting were
Michael Shabot, MD ;
Lawrence Garber, MD and
Christopher Chute, MD, Dr. P.H. William Bria, MD, President,
