10x10 Participants in the University of Kansas’ 10x10 will develop and demonstrate a practical, innovative small-group information technology (IT) project and present it in a face-to-face session at the AMIA 2012 Fall conference. This University of Kansas 10x10 course, which begins Jan. 30, is a web-based, virtual class that provides a broad survey of health informatics focused on five themes: health informatics foundations; clinical decision support; human/organizational factors; public health informatics and current issues in health informatics including best practices. The Jan. 23, 2012 issue of the Wall Street Journal contained two articles arguing opposing views on whether patients should have unique identification numbers for medical records. Readers are invited to vote on whether they think identification numbers are necessary. Read the Article and Vote.
 

The Pharmacy e-Health Information Technology Collaborative released a whitepaper: “The Roadmap for Pharmacy Health Information Technology Integration in U.S. Health Care.” The Roadmap formalizes the priorities of the pharmacy profession in relation to HIT for the next four years to guarantee that electronic health records facilitate safe and effective medication use. It also provides guidance to provider organizations, policymakers, vendors, payers and other stakeholders involved in the integration of pharmacy HIT into the national HIT infrastructure. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) released the first draft of its “National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda.” The report, which is open for comment, will be used to guide funding announcements for comparative clinical effectiveness research that will give patients and those who care for them the ability to make better-informed health decisions. Read the Report. PCORI will hold a National Patient and Stakeholder Dialogue on the first draft Feb. 27.

GAO Reviews NQF Work on Performance Measures

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report discussing the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) progress on contracts awarded under the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The four-year contract calls for the NQF to perform various activities related to health care quality measurements. Read the Report.

Fact Sheets on State Efforts to Implement Health Information Exchanges Available 

 The Kaiser Family Foundation released fact sheets that review states' progress in establishing health insurance exchanges, which are required to be fully operational by January 1, 2014 in compliance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Read the Report.
