2012 Joint Summits The finest minds in translational bioinformatics (TBI) and clinical research informatics (CRI) will meet in San Francisco, March 19-23, for AMIA’s Joint Summits on Translational Science. Join us for a comprehensive scientific meeting that spotlights the latest innovations in deployment and translation of biomedical informatics research products to biomedical research and clinical care. Here are two featured panels:
  • TBI: Crossing the Omic Chasm: Integrating Omic Data into the EHR: For Personalized Genomic Medicine. Panelists: J. Starren, Northwestern University; E. Bottinger, Mount Sinai School of Medicine; M. Dente, GE Healthcare; G. Wood, Intermountain Healthcare; J. Hoffman, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. "Omic" data will need to be integrated into Electronic Health Records (EHRs). This panel will present the perspective and approaches under use by the eMERGE Network, the Pharmacogenomics Research Network, the HL7 Clinical Genomics Workgroup and select EHR vendors. The panel takes place 10:30 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, March 21.
  • CRI: Using Ontologies to Drive Clinical Research: Time to Get Real. Panelists: M. Musen, Stanford University; S. Murphy, Partners Healthcare; R. Wynden, UCSF; P. Mirhaji, The University of Alabama at Birmingham; N. Shah, Stanford University. This panel brings together investigators who have been successful in putting ontologies to work to enhance the clinical research enterprise. The panelists will discuss the ways in which ontological resources have been important in their work, the benefits and limitations of their respective approaches, and the ways in which clinical organizations need to evolve to make maximal use of these new technologies. The panel takes place 1:30 to 3 p.m., Thursday, March 22.

10x10 The University of Utah’s upcoming 10x10 web-based, virtual course provides an introduction to the field of public health informatics. The goal is to introduce informatics and public health students/practitioners to informatics principles and their application to public health problems. Students will develop basic analysis and lifelong learning skills to engage in the evolving field of public health informatics. The Utah 10x10 course is targeted at individuals who will work in the emerging field of population/public health informatics, in either a clinical or public health setting. It will also provide a stepping stone for those wishing to further their education and career development in this field. The course begins Feb. 1, and participants may earn up to 50 CMEs.

Meanwhile, on March 1, the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) will offer an introductory 10x10 course on the role of information technology (IT) in health care delivery. This web-based, virtual course provides an overview on the topic of IT in health care delivery and its focus on IT’s role in improving the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare delivery. Students will be able to discuss the historical antecedents of the present use of IT, as well as the current and likely future uses of health care IT. Eta S. Berner, EdD., professor in the Health Informatics Program in the Department of Health Services Administration in the School of Health Professions at UAB serves as the director of the UAB 10x10 offering. The course begins March 1, and participants may claim up to 48 CMEs.

Also available through the 10x10 program:
  • 10x10 with Kansas University – course begins Jan. 30
  • 10x10 with OHSU – course begins March 28
  • 10x10 with OHSU in conjunction with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics – course begins April 25, registration will open soon.

Stakeholders have until March 12 to submit input regarding deliberations of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director Working Group on Data and Informatics. The working group gathers information from various sources, including internal and external data and informatics experts, and develops recommendations to present to the Advisory Committee Director (ACD) and the NIH Director on policies regarding the management, integration and analysis of research data and administrative data. For additional information click here.

In other business, the NIH issued a Request for Information (RFI) into the deliberations of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director Working Group on Diversity in the Biomedical Research Workforce. The committee is charged with providing recommendations to the ACD and the NIH Director on ways to enhance diversity throughout the various research career stages, particularly with regard to underrepresented minorities, persons with disabilities and persons from disadvantaged backgrounds. Comments are due Feb. 24. Click here to learn more.

The Methodology Committee of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) invites comments on its preliminary translation framework designed to provide guidance and to act as a reference for its Board of Governors to determine research methods that are most likely to address specific comparative clinical effectiveness research questions. Responses to this Request for Information (RFI) must be submitted by 5 p.m. Feb. 17. Learn more here.

Mark your calendars for the Institute of Medicine’s March 21 workshop on genomic-based research. The presentations and discussions will explore various aspects including target identification, clinical trial design, strategic partnerships and the use of emerging technologies such as next generation sequencing. The X PRIZE Foundation and the Qualcomm Foundation invite teams to enter a global competition designed to drive development of devices that will give consumers access to their state of health in the palm of their hand. Teams are encouraged to leverage technology innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and wireless sensing – much like the medical Tricorder of Star Trek® fame – to make medical diagnoses independent of a physician or healthcare provider. Learn more by reading the X PRIZE’s announcement available here.
