As AMIA members know, Dr. Ted Shortliffe will be stepping down as President and CEO of AMIA later this year. However, for now he is continuing to lead the organization. Members and volunteers should feel free to continue to refer matters to him as they have in the past. He will be working to effect a smooth transition to new leadership as the current search process for a successor reaches its conclusion over the next few months.

Rinaldo BellomoAn upcoming webinar titled Clinical Decision Support and Benefits of Early Warning Scoring Systems is the second presentation in an ongoing series on Clinical Decision Support hosted by Philips Healthcare CMIO Joseph Frassica, MD, in conjunction with AMIA. Rinaldo Bellomo, MBBS, MD, FRACP, FCICM, professor of medicine at Melbourne University, is the featured speaker in the webinar which begins at noon, Wednesday, Jan. 25. Bellomo is the staff specialist in intensive care and director of intensive care research at the Austin Hospital, Melbourne, and is founding chair of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society Clinical Trials Group and co-director of the ANZIC Research Centre. 10x10Clinicians, public health practitioners and researchers, IT professionals and others interested in the field of health informatics should register now for the 10x10 course with Kansas University. The virtual course will expose you to a broad survey of health informatics focused on five themes: health informatics foundations; clinical decision support; human/organizational factors; public health informatics and current issues in health informatics including best practices. The course begins Jan. 30.

 
If you’re more interested in public health informatics, don’t miss the opportunity to sign up for the 10x10 with University of Utah. The goal of this web-based, virtual course is to introduce informatics and public health students/practitioners to informatics principles and their application to public health problems. Students will develop basic analysis and lifelong learning skills to engage in the evolving field of public health informatics. The course begins Feb. 1.

The National Quality Forum (NQF) released its Call for Nominations for the Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC), which provides expertise on NQF’s health IT projects.  HITAC members represent a wide range of healthcare stakeholders, including consumers, providers, purchasers, suppliers and public and community healthcare organizations. Each member may serve a maximum of two three-year terms. To stagger the appointment cycle, inaugural HITAC members are serving one-, two-, or three-year terms. This Call for Nominations is to fill the first staggered re-appointment cycle. All nomination materials should be submitted via e-mail only to nominations@qualityforum.org with the subject line “HITAC Nominations” and must be received by 6 pm ET Friday, Feb. 3.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) released the Guide to Reducing Unintended Consequences of Electronic Health Records to help organizations anticipate, avoid and address problems that can occur when implementing and using an electronic health record (EHR). The NIH’s Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research will hold its 12th Annual Summer Institute on Randomized Behavioral Clinical Trials July 15-27 in Warrenton, Va. The session will provide a thorough grounding in the conduct of randomized clinical trials to researchers and health professionals interested in developing competence in the planning, design and execution of randomized clinical trials involving behavioral interventions. AMIA Welcomes User Centric as 2012 Corporate Member
 
User CentricChicago-based User Centric, a global user experience research and design firm, has joined AMIA as a 2012 Corporate Member. User Centric experts have backgrounds in psychology, human-computer interaction, ethnography and interaction design. The self-proclaimed “geeks” of usability apply their expertise to projects involving handhelds, websites, software, medical devices, print, packaging and telephony services. Dr. Michael Shabot is replacing Ted Shortliffe as the AMIA representative to the National Priorities Partnership (NPP). NPP offers consultative support to the Department of Health and Human Services on setting national priorities and goals for the HHS National Quality Strategy. NPP member organizations play a key role in identifying strategies for achieving the aims of better care, affordable care, and healthy people and communities; and facilitating coordinated, multi-stakeholder action. Dr. Shabot was the chief quality officer for Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and is now their chief medical officer. He is a long-time AMIA member with expertise in informatics and HIT with a recent focus on quality. Meryl Bloomrosen, AMIA’s VP for public policy, will continue as AMIA’s alternate. AMIA was recently re-appointed to the NPP for a three-year term. For more information about NPP, click here.
