10x10 The initial goal of AMIA's 10x10 program was to train 10,000 health care professionals in health and biomedical informatics within 10 years of the program’s launch in 2005. Since then 2,059 students have registered for classes and 84 separate 10x10 courses have been offered. The 10x10 programs are designed for working professionals and participants can earn between 48 and 56 continuing education credits per course.

AMIA has developed stellar relationships with 10 partner schools. Oregon Health & Science University offered the first course in 2005. The newest partner is University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston which joined the program in July 2011. The 10x10 courses have a reputation for excellence and nine organizations have collaborated with AMIA to present special offerings. Partners have included the Mayo Clinic, California Healthcare Foundation and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

The UIC College of Applied Health Sciences, Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences, focuses its 10x10 course on examining how health information technology (HIT) can be used to support ... and inhibit ... patient safety. This 10x10 course will examine the informatics and information technology issues surrounding the implementation and use of HIT. On April 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Scientific Education and Professional Development Program Office (SEPDPO) and the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Employment Training Administration (ETA) held a signing ceremony to designate the Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) as a DOL/ETA Registered Apprenticeship. The event also set the foundation for a standard occupational code for the profession of public health informatician.

The signers were Dr. Denise Koo, MPH, Captain, U.S. Public Health Service, Director, SEPDPO; and John Ladd, Administrator, Office of Apprenticeship & Training Administration. Dr. William Hersh, Professor and Chair Department of Medical Informatics & Clinical Epidemiology, Oregon Health & Science University offered remarks at the ceremony. Dr. Hersh is AMIA’s 2012 Scientific Program Chair and attending the live event to represent and speak on behalf of AMIA’s 4000 members.

“It is exciting to see this happening in public health informatics. It is important and well-deserved. I certainly hope to see this type of progress for other informatics disciplines. It is a big deal because showing up in labor statistics is important to human resource people and others who get a lot of their knowledge about employees from the Department of Labor statistics,” said Dr. Hersh after the event.
