The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has provided support to PHI 2011 that enables AMIA to offer a limited number of Foundation-sponsored grants to registrants who require financial assistance in order to attend PHI 2011.

Public health is becoming an increasingly visible topic, evidenced last with the proclamation of National Public Health Week. For those whose department budgets limit their ability to attend PHI 2011, this is a great opportunity.

Grant applicants must:

  • Be a full-time employee of a public health organization at the local, city, state, federal, or territorial level.
  • Register for PHI 2011. Registrants may register at the recently passed early registration rate by downloading a form online and submitting to the AMIA Meetings Director by fax, 301-657-1296 or e-mail: dasha@amia.org.

Grants may be used to cover the costs of meeting registration, travel, and lodging. Criteria for eligibility and a nomination form are online at http://phi2011.amia.org. Submissions will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Grantees will be required to pick up a reimbursement package in Orlando in order to be reimbursed for up to $1,000 for actual costs incurred. Receipts must be provided to AMIA.

The popular Lunch-and-Learn format many registrants at this year’s Joint Summits were calling a “hot ticket” is coming to PHI 2011! The International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS) is hosting a Lunch-and-Learn on Thursday, May 26. Lunch-and-Learn sessions are on the menu at lunchtime during the meeting. To view the PHI 2011 schedule, click here.

ISDS, a nonprofit organization founded in 2005, is dedicated to the improvement of population health by advancing the science and practice of disease surveillance. ISDS cultivates and supports interdisciplinary collaboration by providing technical support and subject matter expertise, offering education and training opportunities, fostering innovative research, coordinating the Distribute project for flu surveillance, and by hosting the premiere annual conference on disease surveillance.

AMIA’s 10x10 with Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), the first and most popular 10x10 course, is open for registration. The course, which begins April 27, provides a detailed overview of biomedical and health informatics for those working in healthcare and with information technology. The course also aims to provide an entry point for career development in the field. It provides a broad understanding of the field from the vantage point of those who implement, lead, and develop IT solutions for improving health, healthcare, public health, and biomedical research. The course director is William Hersh, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology in the School of Medicine at OHSU.

Also available through the 10x10 program:

  • 10x10 with Nova Southeastern University—Survey of Biomedical Informatics. Begins May 16.
  • 10x10 with University of Illinois Chicago—Biomedical & Health Informatics. Begins May 27.
  • 10x10 with Stanford University—Representations and Algorithms for Computational Molecular Biology. Begins June 21.
  • 10x10 with OHSU in conjunction with the American College of Emergency Physicians. Begins June 29.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Donald Berwick joined consumer groups, industry representatives, and other key healthcare stakeholders this week to announce “Partnership for Patients,” a new national partnership aimed at saving 60,000 lives by stopping preventable injuries and complications in patient care over the next three years. The partnership will target all forms of harm to patients, and will begin by asking hospitals to focus on nine types of medical errors and complications where the potential for dramatic reductions in harm rates has been demonstrated by pioneering hospitals and systems across the country. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today launched two strategic plans aimed at reducing health disparities. The HHS Action Plan to Reduce Health Disparities outlines goals and actions HHS will take to reduce health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities. HHS also released the National Stakeholder Strategy for Achieving Health Equity, a common set of goals and objectives for public and private sector initiatives and partnerships to help racial and ethnic minorities and other underserved groups reach their full health potential. The strategy, a product of the National Partnership for Action (NPA), incorporates ideas, suggestions, and comments from thousands of individuals and organizations across the country. National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently concluded a study with a 16-member independent, expert panel that found family history plays an important role in the practice of medicine and may motivate positive lifestyle changes, enhance individual empowerment, and influence clinical interventions. Reporting a positive history of a family disease or condition to a healthcare provider could prompt a range of next steps, from lifestyle changes including diet and exercise to referral to genetic services or other specialists.
