BMJ Group Converts Unlocked Service to Open Access; Affects JAMIA

Beginning September 2012, the terminology for the BMJ Group’s open access service will change from “Unlocked” to “Open Access”. This optional service allows authors to make articles freely available online, immediately on publication, for a fee. The term “Open Access” has become established as the industry standard and is understood by authors and research funders.

Unlocked articles submitted before September 2012 will continue to be subject to the Creative Commons ‘Attribution Non Commercial 2.0’ license. Open Access articles submitted after this date will be subject to the Creative Commons ‘Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported’ license, which specifically prohibits commercial use of these articles. All readers of the articles are able to use them in accordance with the terms of these licenses.

Authors participating in the Open Access service are able to place the full final version of their article in the depositories of their choice. BMJ Journals will continue to deposit all Open Access articles in PubMed Central immediately on publication. The article will be flagged as Open Access on the table of contents and article content box – BMJ Group is in the process of establishing new logos and text to replace the current Unlocked flags. All websites, emails and documents that mention the Unlocked service will be updated.

If authors do not wish to pay the Open Access fee, the article will be published in the usual way and remain behind access controls. Permitted use by an author of their article published in any BMJ journal, whether it is published Open Access or not, is covered by the terms and conditions of that journal’s exclusive license agreement.
