Correction: Judy Ozbolt chairs ONC Panel on eHealth

In the 3.21.13 edition of e-News, Judy Ozbolt was incorrectly identified in an item about an ONC report on eHealth. The item should have been reported as follows:

Engaging patients and lay caregivers in managing their own health promises better collaboration with clinicians and better health outcomes. Informatics tools can support personal health monitoring and management and communication with clinicians. Like all powerful interventions, however, the rise of consumer eHealth carries risks. A work group commissioned by ONC and chaired by ACMI Fellows Judy Ozbolt, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, FAIMBE, (also a former President of ACMI and nursing informatics pioneer), and Danny Sands, MD, MPH, FACMI, has examined the risks and benefits of consumer eHealth and identified questions for research and strategies clinicians can use today to avoid or mitigate adverse unintended consequences and optimize the benefits of consumer eHealth. The full report is entitled Building Better Consumer eHealth: Summary Report of Consumer eHealth Unintended Consequences Work Group.

AMIA Supports BPC Collaboration on HIT and Patient Safety

The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) has recently undertaken a five-month collaborative effort drawing and developed a set of principles and recommendations for assuring patient safety in health IT, which was released through the report, An Oversight Framework for Assuring Patient Safety in Health Information Technology. The project was undertaken in part in response to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety and Innovation Act of 2012 which calls for the DHHS to develop—within 18 months—a proposed strategy and recommendations for a risk-based regulatory framework for health IT that promotes innovation, protects patient safety, and avoids regulatory duplication.
