Faces of AMIA

The newest face of AMIA is Polun Chang, PhD, Professor, National Yang Ming University, Taiwan/ROC.  He is an avid collector of toys, and has a fondness for robotic toys. He studies how toys are designed and how the ideas could be used in informatics to design better systems.Dr. Chang is also the Chair of the NI2014, 12th International Congress on Nursing Informatics in Taipei.

Dr. Chang’s highlighted article is about the human computer interaction design – how to make devices with small screen display easy to use by nurses, physicians and the elderly. Design and development of interface design principles for complex documentation using PDAs

 
 

AMIA Welcomes New Board Member, Dr. Michael S. Weiner

Dr. Weiner is currently the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at the Department of Defense/Department of Veterans Affairs Interagency Program Office (DoD/VA IPO).  In this capacity, he is responsible for overseeing the development and deployment of the next generation Integrated Electronic Health Record (iEHR) system. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, attended medical school at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board certified Internal Medicine physician. Dr. Weiner also holds a masters degree in Management and a masters degree in Information Systems Technology from George Washington University. More …

Carolyn M. Clancy, MD, to step down from AHRQ

Dr. Carolyn Clancy announced that she will step down as director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality after 10 years of service. As director of the lead agency for health services research, Dr. Clancy has been a tireless advocate for the use of evidence in policymaking. She launched the first annual report to Congress on health care disparities and health care quality, led the development of the Affordable Care Act’s National Quality Strategy, and collaborated with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to launch the Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) provisions on assessing children’s quality of care. A clinician and health services researcher, Dr. Clancy has been a key voice on the importance of building the data infrastructure to conduct HSR. She has also been been an AMIA member and a vigorous advocate for informatics and the AMIA mission. By offering her time and valuable experience she has contributed significantly to the community.

iDASH Summer Research Internship – Biomedical Informatics

iDASH (Integrating Data for Analysis, Anonymization, and SHaring) is a National Center for Biomedical Computing at the University of San Diego, supported by the National Institutes of Health through the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research. National Marfan Foundation Launches Early Investigator Grant Program

NMF is expanding its Research Grant Program with a new Early Investigator Grant Program for researchers beginning their independent career who are studying any or all disciplines related to Marfan syndrome and related disorders. The Foundation will award three $75,000 two-year grant awards annually. The submission deadline is April 15, 2013 and proposals on basic, clinical and translational studies are welcome. More details

Clinical Informatics Subspecialty Certification

International 10x10 Virtual Courses

In i10x10 news … the Hong Kong i10x10 just graduated 18 individuals from the February through September 2012 course, and the Spanish 10x10 course (Argentina) graduated 16 individuals from the August through December 2012 course. The total number of i10x10 graduates since 2008 is 397.

AMIA 10x10 with University of Minnesota School of Nursing

UMN’s contribution to the 10x10 program is a course directed to both a generic overview of nursing and health informatics and the specific application of information and communication technologies in the clinical area.  The primary focus is on the analysis, modeling, standardization, development and deployment of the electronic health record and safe exchange of patient data.  Register now!  Course begins April 1, 2013.

Correction

The 1.24.13 edition of AMIA e-News highlighted a new book authored by two AMIA members, Kathleen A. McCormick, PhD, RN  and Brian Gugerty, DNS, RN,  “Healthcare Information Technology Exam Guide for CompTIA® Healthcare IT Technician & HIT Pro™ Certifications.” Nineteen AMIA members contributed to the Exam Guide and three AMIA member contributors were omitted: Kimberly Baldwin-Streid Reich, Kenneth W. Goodman and J. Michael Kramer. AMIA regrets the error.

AMIA’s position paper entitled “AMIA Board Position Paper, Enhancing patient safety and quality of care by improving the usability of electronic health record systems: recommendations from AMIA” has been published.

On February 4, 2013, AMIA’ submitted comments to ONC regarding their proposed Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action & Surveillance Plan.

A  Kaiser Foundation primer provides a comprehensive overview of the U.S. government’s engagement in global health issues, including a look at the federal programs that support these efforts.

Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project Survey

Pew has released a new survey.  “Tracking for Health.” Pew Internet and American Life Project.

HL7 Forms New Clinical Quality Information Work Group (CQI WG).  The mission of the CQI WG is to create and maintain information technology standards in support of improving health care quality, including clinical care, and to foster collaboration between quality measurement, outcomes and improvement stakeholders.  The CQI WG will coordinate with other HL7 Work Groups to encourage the development and use of standards that include elements that can and will be used to evaluate the success of interoperability efforts.
