Homer R. Warner, MD, PhD, FACMI, is considered one of the fathers of medical informatics. He passed away at age 90 on November 30 and leaves a distinguished legacy (Tribute Video) He pioneered many aspects of computer applications in medicine and is the 1994 Morris F. Collen Award recipient. AMIA grants the Homer R. Warner New Investigator Award annually, in his honor.

Dr. Warner founded and became the first chair in the University of Utah, Department of Biomedical Informatics in the School of Medicine which existed under various names since 1972. The family requests that remembrances are made through donations to the Homer Warner, MD, PhD, Graduate Assistantship in Biomedical Informatics. The scholarship provides a first year graduate assistantship to an incoming PhD-seeking student. The total value of the scholarship is approximately $55,000. (More details.)  Giving information. 7th Annual AMIA Invitational Health Policy Meeting 2012

Since 2006, AMIA has convened an Invitational Health Policy Meeting to look at cutting edge issues in health care and health IT policy. The AMIA Annual Health Policy Conference, commences December 12-13 and focuses on Health Data Use, Stewardship and Governance: Gaps and Challenges. A paper highlighting recommendations from the meeting will be released in 2013.  (As of 12-6-12 the invitation roster is closed.) 
 

George Hripcsak, MD, is chair of the Meeting Steering Committee. Dr. Hripcsak is the Chair, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Columbia University and the Director, Medical Informatics Services, New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia. He also serves as Co-Chair, of the Meaningful Use Workgroup, HIT Policy Committee of the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology (ONC). 
 
The AMIA Policy Committee members have actively worked to support the meeting and bring together 100 public and private sector participants for the multi-disciplinary, working meeting.

Correction: Top 25 Clinical Informaticist List

The 11.21.12 issue of AMIA e-news highlighted Modern Healthcare’s third annual list of the Top 25 Clinical Informaticists. Two AMIA members were incorrectly identified on the list.
 
Dr. Christopher Longhurst is a chief medical information officer at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Palo Alto, Calif., and a clinical associate professor of pediatrics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. 
 
Dr. Robert Murphy is chief medical informatics officer of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, Houston.


2013 ACMI Winter Symposium:
What should informatics do to address the healthcare crisis?

The 2013 Winter Symposium of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) meeting is titled "What should informatics do to address the healthcare crisis?" and intended to take a critical look at how informatics can become more effective at helping tackle the significant problems facing the healthcare system today.

AMIA member input requested The symposium is open to ACMI fellows and the body is seeking input and suggestions from AMIA members.

  • What critical issues should be discussed?
  • Where is informatics falling short in its potential to positively affect healthcare?

Call for Applications: 2013 Macy Faculty Scholars Program $100,000

The Macy Faculty Scholars program is designed to support early- to mid-career faculty in medicine and nursing who are dedicated to improving the education of health professionals. Up to five faculty are selected each year to pursue educational change at their home institutions—innovations that better prepare health professions graduates to succeed and meet our nation’s health care needs. 

Scholars receive salary support of $100,000 per year for two years and at least 50 percent protected time for two years to pursue their educational projects. Macy Faculty Scholars information

Regenstrief-Merck Scholar’s Award in
Pharmacoepidemiology and Informatics

New post-doctoral training opportunity

The Regenstrief-Merck Scholar’s Award in Pharmacoepidemiology and Informatics offers two visiting scholar positions to provide post-doctoral training at the intersection of pharmacoepidemiology and biomedical informatics at the institute. Individuals who have earned an MD., PhD., Pharm.D. or equivalent doctoral degree are eligible for the Scholar’s Award.

mHealth Alliance Partnership Board Names Karl Brown Chairman

The mHealth Alliance named Karl Brown, Associate Director at the Rockefeller Foundation, the new Chairman of the Partnership Board, effective February 1, 2013.  He succeeds outgoing Chairman (chairman emeritus) Tom Wheeler. The mHealth Alliance is a global catalyst for unlocking the potential of mobile technologies to support health information and service delivery, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.
