Clinical Informatics Board Review Course Launches

More than 75 physicians registered for the inaugural Clinical Informatics Board Review Course, April 12-14.  Course Director, William (Bill) Hersh, MD and faculty members, Bimal Desai, MD, MBI; Tom Payne, MD; Diane Montella, MD, and course consultant Ben Munger, PhD, welcomed attendees to the intensive review.  The Board exam is in October 2013 and is open to physicians in all 24 specialties.  The cross section of physicians represented primary board certifications in allergy and immunology, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, pathology, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, preventative medicine, surgery, and thoracic surgery. Sixteen percent of the attendees were women.

Don E. Detmer, MD, MA, and Edward H. Shortliffe, MD, PhD, AMIA past presidents and CEOs were present, and both were instrumental in creating and guiding the clinical informatics subspecialty and the review course into existence. Course feedback forms are being tabulated, but immediate response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.

"The inaugural offering of the course was extremely successful. The attendees were highly engaged and enthusiastic, and were pleased to be getting an overview of the field that would help those of them planning to take the certification exam be well-prepared for it. We are looking forward to the next offerings of the course as well,"  said Dr. Hersh.

New 10x10 Virtual Course Standards and Terminologies Opens May 13
Earn up to 50 CMEs

Use of standards are critical for interoperability and are required for the meaningful use of data, both for their primary use (e.g. in the clinical setting) as well as their secondary use for quality monitoring, public health reporting, decision support, and research and analysis. It is important for persons involved in the design, development and use of systems to understand the role, use and benefits of standards for terminology, messaging, and information modeling.  The course will introduce informatics students, clinicians, and public health practitioners to fundamental principles about standards and terminology and their importance for the exchange and meaningful use of health information.

Course Director: Catherine Staes, BSN, MPH, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Informatics, School of Medicine at University of Utah. Lectures are provided by experts in the field including Stanley M. Huff, MD, one of the founders of LOINC.

JAMA Series on Genomic Revolution Rocking Healthcare

AMIA members Justin Starren, Chris Chute and Isaac Kohane have published articles on genomics in JAMA. Both articles are based on work from the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network.  AMIA members are leaders of many of the eMERGE participant organizations. The primary goal of eMERGE is to develop, disseminate, and apply approaches to research that combine DNA biorepositories with electronic medical record (EMR) systems for large-scale, high-throughput genetic research.

"Crossing the Omic Chasm: A Time for Omic Ancillary Systems" focuses on the possible architectures that could be used to integrate data from “omic” ancillary systems with data from electronic health record systems. Authors are Justin Starren, MD, PhD; Marc S. Williams, MD; Erwin P. Bottinger, MD.

Genomic Medicine, Health Information Technology, and Patient Care” focuses on the informatics issues that need to be addressed to realize the full benefits of genomics in health care, for example, developing a standard naming convention for genetic variants, developing an accessible database of linkages between genetic variants and diseases, and developing a repository of genetics-related rules that could be integrated into electronic health records systems.

Authors are Christopher G. Chute, MD, DrPH and Isaac S. Kohane, MD, PhD.
