The AMIA 1999 Spring Congress

A WELCOME FROM THE PROGRAM CHAIR

Joseph W. Hales, PhD Welcome to the 1999 AMIA Spring Congress. The focus of this year's congress, health informatics education, is timely. With an ever increasing use of information technology in all facets of health care, demand for health professionals and administrators with informatics training is on the rise. Against this background of opportunity, those providing health informatics education are striving to better define the scope of the discipline and to identify how best to prepare informaticians for varied roles. The 1999 AMIA Spring Congress program committee has crafted a program to address these issues. Through a combination of invited panels and structured breakout discussions, the program will build understanding of the present needs in health informatics education, then outline goals and solutions to guide us into the next century, not only for career informaticians, but for others in health care who will require a working knowledge of informatics. The presenters and panelists on the program represent a wide diversity of experience, including leaders from outside the informatics community who are seeking informaticians for a variety of roles, experienced informaticians now in a broad range of professional settings, and established health informatics educators. The format of the 1999 Spring Congress is designed to foster discourse among attendees, with the breakout discussions affording an opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and collectively look at the major issues facing health informatics education as we head into the twenty-first century.

We hope you will join us May 25-27 in Chicago for what promises to be a seminal event in the evolution of health informatics education.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS…
SHOWCASE YOUR INFORMATICS EDUCATION PROGRAM

Formal training and education programs in medical and health informatics are invited to submit a brief proposal to showcase the design, or particularly innovative aspects, of their informatics program curriculum to Spring Congress attendees in the form of a poster presentation. Space is limited, and submissions will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Displays will be 4' x 6' and will be on view during breaks and early morning and late afternoon hours on Wednesday, and on Thursday morning. All displays must be accompanied by a conference registrant; only one display per institution please. For more details about the posters and proposal submission guidelines, see the Spring Congress page at the AMIA Web site at http://www.amia.org/s99/main.htm.

LIMITED SPACE, SO GET YOUR REGISTRATION IN EARLY…

Consistent with the change in format and scope of the AMIA Spring Congress, the facilities reserved for this year's meeting are smaller than for those in the past. While AMIA is committed to making the Spring Congress open and inclusive, there is a finite number of rooms available at the Drake Hotel for this event and an upper limit on the number of attendees that can be accommodated in the meeting rooms. We therefore encourage you to get your registration and hotel reservation forms in early.
