Philadelphia Sightseeing

Philadelphia Sightseeing

With nine unique districts to explore, Philadelphia offers something for everyone. Visitors can stroll through the Parkway/Museum District, home of the world’s largest landscaped city park, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Rodin Museum; the Waterfront and Historic Park District, which contains America’s most historic square mile; or the Washington Square District, where the shops on Antique Row offer irresistible merchandise. Other not-to-miss Philadelphia landmarks include Carpenters’ Hall, where the First Continental Congress met in 1774; the State House (later renamed to Independence Hall), where the Declaration of Independence was signed; and the Liberty Bell. Families will enjoy visiting the Philadelphia Zoo, one of the nation’s outstanding zoological facilities, and the Franklin Institute Science Museum and Please Touch Museum for Children, both of which feature hands-on exhibits.

To enhance this walker's paradise, Philadelphia has created an interactive, multimedia kiosk system that provides information about local attractions, shopping, services, culture, recreation, and entertainment. Look for the "Touch and See Philadelphia" kiosks all around town. For more information on Philadelphia’s many attractions, visit the city’s Web site at http://www.libertynet.org/phila-visitor or call the Visitor’s Center at (800) 527-7676 or (215) 636-1666.

In addition to Philadelphia's sightseeing attractions, two special events will be taking place around the Memorial Day holiday, May 25. Make plans to catch one of these fun and unique festivals when you visit Philadelphia to attend the AMIA 1998 Spring Congress!

Riverblues is a weekend-long waterfront festival featuring the top names in blues at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing. Jambalaya Jam is a New Orleans-style festival featuring bands on five stages playing jazz, zydeco, funk, and Dixieland music; delicacies such as pralines, gumbo, jambalaya, and other Creole and Cajun food favorites; and Louisianan crafts. The Jam will also take place at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing. For more information on these events, please contact the Visitor's Center at (215) 636-1666.
