AMIA’99 AFFILIATE MEETINGS

IDAMAP’99 Workshop (W2)

AMIA is pleased to be home this year to this workshop that focuses on issues, methods, and developments in Intelligent Data Analysis in Medicine and Pharmacology (IDAMAP). By focusing on activities that foster the development, adaptation, and use of intelligent data analysis techniques in biomedical tasks, the ultimate goal of the people working on IDAMAP is the successful integration and employment of these methods in modern hospital information systems in health care and elsewhere. This workshop will feature papers that show their successful application.

In keeping with tradition, the Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in Nursing (CARING) will host a luncheon at AMIA’99. The luncheon speaker, Russell Jones, Commercial Practice Director for Information Security at SAIC, will speak on information security issues affecting health care. Attendance at the luncheon is open to all conference participants. The luncheon cost is $30; please remember to check the appropriate box on the AMIA’99 registration form. IMIA/AMIA Workshop on International Perspectives of Health and Medical Informatics Education

There is a growing tendency for countries all over the world to harmonize their financial and economic markets as well as their health care systems. Many national health care systems and medical research areas are forced to deal with global problems that call for creative solutions on an international scale. For these reasons the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) encourages and recommends international activities in educating health and medical informatics specialists. In this workshop, international experts in the field of health and medical informatics will discuss the possibilities and limits of establishing international education such as

  • exchange of students and teachers,
  • sharing of courseware,
  • establishing of joint international courses and programs,
  • establishing collaborative international research.
Workshop leaders will include Prof. Dr. Reinhold Haux, University of Heidelberg, chairperson of IMIA WG1 on Health and Medical Informatics Education; Joseph W. Hales, PhD, University of Missouri-Columbia, chairperson of the AMIA education committee; and Judith V. Douglas, MA, MHS, First Consulting Group and AMIA liaison officer to IMIA WG1.

IMIA-NI/SIG Workshop on International Nursing Concepts Representation: Standards and Classifications (W14)

The Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA-NI/SIG) will conduct this workshop on nursing concept representation. Workshop leaders will focus on nursing terminologies, classifications, and vocabulary activities in their respective countries and the relationship of their work to multinational efforts. They will address coding and classification systems for nursing diagnoses or phenomena, nursing actions or interventions, and nursing outcomes. The workshop will address the future need for nursing to utilize a standardized coding and classification system. This session will set the goals for nursing in the 21st century. Workshop leaders include Evelyn Hovenga, PhD, Chair, IMIA-NI/SIG: Pacific Rim Classification, Virginia K. Saba, EdD, RN, Vice Chair, IMIA-NI/SIG:WHO: Family of Diseases, Debrah Konicek, RN, SNOMED International, Carol Bickford, MS, RN, American Nurses Association (ANA) Classifications, and Heimar Marin, RN, PhD, International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP).

National Library of Medicine (NLM) Training Programs Showcase
