The Advanced ICU at Lehigh Valley Hospital: Remote Answers to Local Challenges
The demand for critical care continues to increase as our population ages. The challenge is compounded by an increasing shortage of critical care physicians and nurses. Regulatory agencies continue to raise the bar regarding staffing and credentialing for those that deliver critical care.

Lehigh Valley Hospital, a tertiary academic community hospital in Pennsylvania, has implemented an ICU information system and has integrated this application with other advanced technologies to create a remote critical are monitoring system. Dr. Levick, Physician Liaison for Information Services and Past-President of the Medical Staff, will discuss the forces driving the development of the Advanced ICU, describe the components and operation of the Advanced ICU, and review the quality and efficiency improvement that have been realized since go-live.

Donald Levick, MD, MBA
Donald Levick, MD, MBA is a practicing Pediatrician and the Physician Liaison for the Information Services Department of Lehigh Valley Hospital. As physician liaison, he acts as the primary contact between the medical staff and the IS department. He is involved in the planning and implementation of the several information technology projects, including CPOE, an ambulatory EMR, Clinical Data Repositories and Evidence Based Medicine. He is the Chairman of the hospital's Clinical Decision Support Committee and Director of the Knowledge Integration Team.

Dr. Levick has worked with the PA eHealth Initiative since its inception, and currently serves on the Board of Trustees and the Finance Committee. He is a current member of the Board of Directors for Delaware Valley HIMSS, and serves on the HIMSS National Membership Committee.

Dr. Levick is the Past-President of the Medical Staff of Lehigh Valley Hospital, and previously served as the chairman of the Board of Governors and Associate Medical Director of the Lehigh Valley Physician Group (the employed physician group of Lehigh Valley Hospital).

Dr. Levick has experience in strategic planning and leading change at multiple organizational levels. He has been published in both journals and books, and has spoken nationally on CPOE and change management.
