American Health Information Community

The American Health Information Community (AHIC) will be holding its 17th Meeting in Chicago at the Annual Symposium of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) on November 13th. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt will keynote the AMIA meeting in the morning, and will then chair the public meeting of the AHIC. The 17 appointed AHIC members include key leaders from both the public and the private sector, who make recommendations to the Secretary on how to accelerate the development and adoption of interoperable health information technology.

The November 13th AHIC meeting will feature a discussion on the AHIC Successor (or "AHIC 2.0") planning award. AHIC 2.0 is envisioned as an independent and sustainable entity, which will bring together the best attributes and resources of public and private entities. This new public-private partnership in the private sector will have a broad membership from all sectors of health care and will develop a unified approach to realize an effective, interoperable nationwide health information system that supports the health and well-being of the people of the United States.

In addition, the meeting will include a presentation on the newly-announced Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) trial implementations. The nine awardees include organizations representing both state and regional health information exchanges (HIEs), which will work together to deliver the foundation for basic health information exchange upon which more complex functions can be built. This start of a “network of networks” will be an important leap forward to advance the nation toward the President’s goal of broad access to electronic health records that can follow consumers throughout their lives.

Finally, the AHIC will hear from both the NCVHS as well as the AMIA on secondary uses of health information. The focus will be on the secure and appropriate use of health data to benefit health and health care; advance medical knowledge; enhance quality measurement and reporting; and improve public health surveillance and reporting.
