The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is an organization of leaders shaping the future of health information technology in the United States and abroad. AMIA is dedicated to the development and application of medical informatics in support of patient care, teaching, research, and health care administration.

It has been an exciting year for AMIA. Please join us for a State of the Association Meeting on Tuesday, October 25 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Charles Safran, AMIA Chairman, will provide a membership update including the 10x10 program and AMIA's efforts to transform health care in the areas of clinical informatics, public health informatics and translational bioinformatics. He will also discuss his successes during his term with AMIA and introduce the incoming Chairman, Paul Tang, who begins his term in January 2006.

Don Detmer, AMIA President and CEO will take some time to re-cap his first year with AMIA and highlight the many new and continuing initiatives including the GotEHR? Campaign, AMIA Day on the Hill and legislative briefings, the early success of the 10x10 program, and AMIA's alliance with AHIMA in the public policy arena.

Carolyn Clancy, AHRQ Director has been invited to offer remarks to the membership on many of the new initiatives that AHRQ is embarking on as well as to be on hand to answer questions about much of the work they continue to undertake with AMIA members.

AMIA links developers and users of health information technology, creating an environment which fosters advances that revolutionize health care. Membership is open to individuals, institutions, and corporations.

The 3,500 members of AMIA include:

  • Physicians, nurses, and clinicians
  • Health information technology professionals
  • Computer information scientists

AMIA has a rich history of achievement
AMIA was founded in 1990 by the merger of three organizations - the American Association for Medical Systems and Informatics (AAMSI), the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI), and the Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC). AMIA is the official United States representative to the International Medical Informatics Association.
