Frequently Asked Questions about AMIA Annual Symposia

Who is AMIA?
The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) is the premier association in the United States dedicated to the development and application of medical and health informatics in the support of patient care, teaching, research, and healthcare administration. AMIA was founded in 1990 through the merger of three existing health informatics associations. Since that time, AMIA has grown to more than 3,500 members worldwide. Together these members represent all basic, applied, and clinical interests in health care information technology.

What is Medical Informatics?
Medical informatics has to do with all aspects of understanding and promoting the effective organization, analysis, management, and use of information in health care. While the field of medical informatics shares the general scope of these interests with some other health care specialties and disciplines, medical informatics has developed its own areas of emphasis and approaches that have set it apart from other fields. A common thread through medical informatics is the emphasis on technology as an integral tool to organize, analyze, manage, and use information. The professionals involved in medical informatics have historically been engaged in research, development, and evaluation aspects, and in studying and teaching the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of data applications in health care. Today, the profession has expanded to include many, whose activities are focused on the administration and everyday collection and use of information in health care.

Who typically attends the AMIA Annual Symposia?
The AMIA Annual Symposium draws people from a wide range of settings with a variety of approaches and interests:
  • Scientists, educators, and researchers
  • Physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals
  • Biomedical engineers and bioinformaticists
  • Computer scientists, system developers, and programmers
  • Administrators and CIOs
  • Medical Librarians and other information professionals

The profession includes many, whose activities are focused on the administration, collection, and use of information in health care.

How do I become a presenter AMIA Annual Symposia?
Presenters at the AMIA Annual Symposium are chosen through a submission and review process. The Scientific Program Committee for each meeting has the responsibility for the final selection of submissions for all categories of presentations - papers, panels, theater-style demonstrations, posters, tutorials, and workshops. To facilitate this process, the committee is assisted by an interdisciplinary group of reviewers who initially evaluate submitted papers and judge them according to content, originality, relevance, organization, and clarity.

Calls for Participation are available in November for submission between January and March of the meeting year. To request a copy of this document call the AMIA offices at 301-657-1291 or e-mail mail@amia.org.
