American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) Programs
The American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) was formed in 1984 as an honorary organization to recognize the contributions of leaders in the science and application of medical informatics. As part of the consolidation of the American Association for Medical Systems and Informatics (AAMSI), ACMI, and the Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC), ACMI became the fellowship component of AMIA. Fellows of ACMI nominate individuals for membership, and several new members are elected to ACMI each year. New members are inducted into ACMI at the AMIA Annual Symposium.

The 2002 Award Recipient is Dr. Marion Ball
This special award is made to an individual who has shown leadership and made significant contributions to medical informatics. The ACMI Morris F. Collen Award of Excellence will be presented to Marion J. Ball, EdD at the Opening Session of AMIA 2002.

Dr. Marion Ball is an international innovator, educator, author, and leader with over twenty-five years of experience in the field of health care information technology.

Through her work on behalf of the National Library of Medicine and its Board of Regents, Dr. Ball is well acquainted with the mission and promise of programs in the federal, academic, and private sectors, and has published some of the core texts in the field and in telehealth. Her book, Cancer Informatics: Essential Technologies for Clinical Trials, was recently published, making this her twentieth title published in the health informatics series she edits for Springer-Verlag, New York.

She is a founding board member of Health on the Net (HON) and an elected member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), where she earlier served as a member of the IOM committee to improve the patient record.

Dr. Ball has received numerous academic, national, and international awards for her contribution to the medical and information technology industry, including her 1984 induction into the American College of Medical Informatics. She is the recipient of such coveted awards as the Distinguished Service Award from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Pioneer Award for Computers in Healthcare and is a two-time recipient of the President's Award from the American Medical Informatics Association.

Dr. Ball is an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and an affiliate faculty of Information Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

As an educator and speaker, Dr. Ball has led workshops and lectured on various aspects of health informatics worldwide. Most recently, she has concentrated on patient safety and the role of enabling technologies.

As Vice President of Healthlink's Clinical Solutions Division, Dr. Ball helps health care companies with their integrated computing services from planning, developing, selecting, training and implementing to optimizing their clinical systems.

Training in Bio-medical Informatics: Future Approaches to Curricula and Funding
Tuesday, November 12
8:30 am-10:00 am
Room 006 A/B/C, River Level

The theme of this AMIA Symposium is Bio*Medical Informatics: One Discipline.
The unity and integration conveyed by this theme are perhaps a viable visions from the viewpoints of most AMIA members, but developments in the larger world of biomedical research might suggest otherwise. It may be the case that two distinct cultures-one aligned with molecular biology and the other aligned with the computational sciences (including informatics)-are working independently and even at cross purposes to develop a vision for how computation and biology will interact in the future. These diverging cultures are seen clearly in models for training as well as practice. This session will focus on models for training future informaticians, models that largely reflect the integrated and sophisticated vision of this year's symposium. This discussion will be put in the context of the diverging cultures that may prove to be a significant impediment to the widespread adoption of these integrated models.

About the Nicholas E. Davies CPR Recognition Program

The Nicholas E. Davies CPR Recognition Program was established to encourage and recognize excellence in CPR systems. The Program fosters CPR development by recognizing health care provider organizations that successfully use CPR systems to improve health care delivery. Information on successful systems collected as part of the program, including empirical data on the costs and benefits, will better inform health care leaders and the public about the significant contribution of CPR systems to improve health care and provide a framework for defining further investment and innovation. The Program's objectives are to:
  • Promote the vision of CPR systems through concrete examples
  • Understand and share documented value of CPR systems
  • Promote development and use of health care information standards
  • Provide visibility and recognition for high-impact CPR systems
  • Share successful CPR implementation strategies
