About the Association

The American Medical Informatics Association is the premier organization in the United States dedicated to the development and application of medical informatics in the support of patient care, teaching, research, and health care administration. AMIA was founded in 1990 through the merger of three existing health informatics associations. Since that time, AMIA has grown to nearly 3,200 members from 42 countries worldwide. Together, these members represent all basic, applied and clinical interests in health care information technology.

Membership Categories

Regular Member

Physicians, nurses, dentists, biomedical engineers, educators, medical librarians, researchers and other health care professionals who have a strong interest in medical informatics. Regular members receive JAMIA, the AMIA Yearbook & Directory and the IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics at no extra charge. Regular members also receive membership in two working groups. Discounts for AMIA Annual Symposium, Spring Congress and Site Visits apply.

Institutional Member

Nonprofit organizations, nonprofit associations, nonprofit universities, nonprofit hospitals and libraries. All regular member benefits apply for one individual designated as the contact person. Additional benefits include conference publications and promotional opportunities offering support and exposure.

Corporate Member

For-profit corporations that are supporters of the medical informatics community. Numerous corporate membership benefits apply at the three levels of membership; platinum, gold and silver. For information and an application for corporate membership, please contact the AMIA office or visit the AMIA web site at www.amia.org.

Retired Member

Retirees at least 60 years of age who have been members of AMA for the past two years or longer. All benefits of regular membership apply.

Student Member

Persons currently enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program or in an academic program such as a medical residency or post-doctoral fellowship. A certified letter attesting to the student's full time status at an academic institution is required along with the application. JAMIA is not included in student membership fees, but students may subscribe at a special rate. Students are automatic members of the student working group at no additional charge. Special conference discounts apply.

Associate Member

Individuals may join one working group or special interest group for one year only. No regular member benefits apply. No journals, newsletters or conference discounts will be given.

Meetings & Conferences

AMIA's meetings and conferences offer the best in panels, tutorials, paper presentations, workshops and exhibits. By joining AMIA, you will receive significant discounts to all of the meetings and conferences.

Starting as the Symposium on Computer Applications of Medical Care in 1977, 2001 is the twenty-fifth consecutive Annual Symposium. It remains the world's premier conference on health informatics research, development, and application. Symposium programming will include a series of tutorials, workshops, and program sessions designed for diverse levels of expertise among those involved with the acquisition, use, and management of information technology in health care.

Annual Symposium Proceedings

Registered attendees of the Annual Symposium receive a copy of the current year's proceedings as part of their registration fee. If you would like to order additional copies or copies from past years, visit the AMIA bookstore or order on-line at www.amia.org.

2001 AMIA Spring Congress
May 15-17, 2001
Atlanta, GA

The Spring Congress has taken on a new approach. While preserving the principle of a thematic focus, the meeting follows a more streamlined structure. Over the period of two-and-a-half days, the Spring Congress functions as a working meeting, featuring a blend of plenary and small breakout sessions, incorporating background papers and generating discussion among attendees.

Site Visit Program

Members can see medical informaticians at work on internationally acclaimed projects at the finest major academic centers of excellence in medical informatics research and development.

JAMIA-The Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association

AMIA's timely and informative journal is the primary source of information for professionals in medical informatics. All regular, institutional, corporate and retired members receive JAMIA bi-monthly. Students may order JAMIA at a special student member rate.

AMIA Yearbook & Directory

This valuable networking tool, available exclusively to AMIA members for noncommercial purposes, provides completed address, phone, fax and e-mail information for each AMIA member. It also provides an overview of the current year, and lets you know what's in store for the following year.

Discounted Member Subscription-Journal of Biomedical Informatics

Regular, institutional, corporate and student members may also purchase a subscription to Journal of Biomedical Informatics which is a refereed journal that provides researchers and clinicians with up-to-date information about the application of computers to health care. To purchase a subscription, check the Journal of Biomedical Informatics box on the application form and enclose appropriate payment.

IMIA Yearbook of Medical Informatics

Published by the International Medical Informatics Association, this annual publication includes the best papers from the international arena of medical informatics.
