Surgical Services

System/Business Coordinator Surgical Services- Registered Nurse

Major Functions and Responsibilities:

  • The Operating Room R.N. is responsible and accountable for the delivery and documentation of patient care during the intraoperative period.
  • Systems Coordinator RN is responsible and accountable for the supervision and daily operations and maintenance of the Surgical Services Information System (ORBIT). Ensures accurate data input regarding patient charges, with ongoing monitoring of surgical supply costs for increases/decreases in order to implement changes within the hospital system within a timely manner. Assists with implementation of computer software related to inventory management and physician preference list.
  • Other areas of responsibility are as follows:

Fiscal Management

  • Utilizes supplies and materials in a cost-effective manner.
  • Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with established desired quantities.

Standards of Nursing Practice

  • Provides quality patient care as outlined in the departments policies and procedures.
  • Interprets and monitors compliance of established standards, policies and procedures for surgical technicians and other unlicensed Surgical Services personnel as applicable.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to age specific issues and data reflective of the patient’s status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the following age groups:

· Will limit access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job.

· Will share information only on a need to know basis.

· Individual access to computerized health information will be controlled via user ID and password. Access will be limited based on reasonable determinations regarding the individual’s position and/or department.

  • Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as such practice do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy, as accepted by the patient through informed consent.

Essential Functions

  1. Systems management- assists with all aspects of the Perioperative Information system in regards to materials management and patient charges.
    1. Maintains System integrity by entering all surgical services supply items to create a master file to assure current and accurate data. Updates file on and ongoing basis.
    2. Acts as a liaison with Information Services and outside vendors for support in troubleshooting system problems.
    3. Participates in system upgrades and installation of software enhancements as necessary.
    4. Performs analysis and makes recommendations for acquisition of system enhancements.
  1. Patient Charging- supervises completion of patient charges to assure accuracy and timely completion.
    1. Compiles and revises data required for perioperative charge master.
    2. Reviews and revises patient charge sheets to ensure accuracy.
    3. Ensures that all charges are entered within five days of treatment date.
    4. Implements departmental procedure by exception through use of physician preference lists in order to reduce lost charges.
    5. Monitors all supplies for cost changes and implements system changes to reflect the changes.
  1. Materials Management – Implements use of physician preference lists available on ORBIT system to allow monitoring of supply needs, physician profiles, as well as decreasing lost charges through charging by exception.

 

    1. Functions as liaison to Director of Surgical Services in regard to supply variances and budget issues.
  1. Promotes and environment in which the surgical team can work cooperatively toward achieving individual, unit and hospital objectives.
    1. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to function, as an effective communicator in various forms (oral, written, and nonverbal).
    2. Provides input into the development of unit specific goals and assists in their attainment.
  1. Acts as liaison between administration, other departments and unit staff, thereby promoting interdepartmental communication.
    1. Maintains clear lines of authority and responsibility within professional services at all times by following the chain of command.
    2. Disseminates information/administrative decisions to staff in a positive and supportive manner.
  1. Assists with case scheduling needs.
    1. Schedules cases
    2. Print pull sheets
    3. Advise managers of conflicts, potential problems anticipated on schedule.

Education Development

  • Assists in the orientation of new employees.
  • Attends and participates in departmental staff meetings.
  • Ensures individual skills are current by attending relevant educational programs.

Surgical Services Environment

  • Assures a safe, therapeutic operating room environment is maintained for patients and health care providers.
  • Participates in departmental fire and disaster drills.
  • Complies with infection control guidelines.

 

Surgical Services Performance Improvement Program

  • Assists in the identification of patient related potential problem areas for referral for quality review.
  • Monitors established quality review indicators for compliance.
  • Participates as assigned in the department Performance Improvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for supervising non-professional and technical personnel assigned to the Operating Room when functioning as a circulator.

Education/Training:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certif/Licenses:

  • Currently licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of North Carolina.

The employee is occasionally required to reach and stretch with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, couch, or crawl.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
