Informatics Roles in Genomics


Job descriptions and qualification information for Positions in this area

Informatics roles in genomics exist wherever information technology is used to efficiently gather and analyze the large volume of data produced by modern methods of genetic analysis, and correlate that data with the manifestations of normal and/or disease states. Below are some roles, with actual job descriptions and desired qualifications that appeared in recent job advertisements:

  • Database administrator
    Maintains biomedical datasets
    Responsibilities
    • Design/development/support of database/web applications, collaborating closely with a group of research scientists
    • Design, code, troubleshoot and unit test database software programs
    • Install/maintain postgresql/mysql/tomcat servers
    Qualifications
    • BS/BA Degree - Preferably in Computer Science or Bioinformatics
    • 2+ years Java programming experience
    • 1+ years of relevant experience in database applications design/development in mysql/postgresql/J2EE (Tomcat/Axis) environment
    • Demonstated ability to design/develop database applications
    • Working knowledge of XML, XML schema, XSLT a plus
    • Strong interest in bionformatics/biological databases
    • Must be a good team player with strong communication skills

  • Research Director
    Leads a team of research scientists and staff
    Responsibilities:
    1. Lead the research and development of algorithms and software for bioinformatics activities.
    2. Work on a team of PhDs from various bioinformatics related fields.
    3. Supervise one or more programmers to develop and test new data mining algorithms.
    4. Develop creative new solutions and processes.
    5. Write technical reports and academic publications
    6. Assist in fund raising efforts.
    Qualifications:
    • PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field of science with a focus on Machine Learning/Data Mining
    • Strong programming skills in C, C++, and/or Java.
    • Strong statistics background.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • 2+ years of post-PhD experience in research and/or management.
    Additional desirable qualifications:
    • Experience with SQL and database APIs.
    • Experience with GUI design and development.
    • Familiarity with common commercial data mining and statistical packages.
    • Experience in behavioral science.

  • Application developer
    Develops software that uses biomedical datasets
    • Data capture tools
    • Analytical algorithms
    • Data visualization tools
    • Risk communication tools

  • Human-computer interface designer

  • Epidemiologist

  • Research Scientist
    Plans and leads research using biomedical datasets

  • Data analyst / Biostatistician
    Designs and/or applies statistical tools to biomedical datasets

  • Graduate Student, Postdoctoral Fellow
    Apprentice research scientists. May have role(s) of application developer, database administrator and/or data analyst for a research project.
