  • Advancing Practice, Instruction and Innovation through Informatics (APIII 2004)

GEN-WG members might be interested in APIII, an informatics-related meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. In the past, the timing has conflicted with or been too close to the AMIA Fall Symposium, but this year, with AMIA's meeting rolled into MEDINFO, some GEN-WG members may be able to attend APIII. Topic coverage has been extended to include pathology, oncology and biology informatics. This fall's meeting will have a significant focus on the NCI Cancer Bioinformatics Grid (caBIG). Among the featured speakers are AMIA members Christopher Chute and Joyce Niland.

AMIA members are eligible for a 15% discount off the registration fee.
The deadline for early registration is September 1, 2004.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS - APIII 2004
Extended deadline for all abstract submissions is midnight, September 1, 2004

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, Division of Pathology Informatics and UPMC Information Services Division cordially invite you to participate in the ninth annual conference on Advancing Practice, Instruction and Innovation through Informatics (APIII 2004). The conference will be held at the Marriott City Center in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, October 6 - 8, 2004. Complete information about this conference is available at http://apiii.upmc.edu

APIII 2004 will feature three main areas of concentration:

    • Pathology Informatics (such as controlled vocabulary, decision support, digital microscopy, distance learning)
    • Oncology Informatics (such as oncology outcomes research, clinical trials informatics, consumer-health informatics)
    • Bioinformatics (such as microarray data analysis, proteomics, bioinformatics, networks and pathways, and computational biology)

Scientific Sessions (abstracts for presentations accepted)

The Scientific Session will consist of a series of 10-12 minute talks, each of which is immediately followed by questions, which are posed by the audience and members of a scientific panel. Researchers interested in making presentations as part of these sessions should submit a 400 word abstract through the meeting web site (apiii.upmc.edu). There is particular interest in submissions that focus on three main areas of sub-specialization: pathology informatics, oncology informatics, and bioinformatics.
Recommended topics include but are not limited to: controlled vocabulary, digital microscopy, computer-assisted decision support, pattern recognition, tissue and gene array analysis, data-mining, education, and outcomes research. Recognition will be based on how the presenter's work furthers the fields of informatics, as well as on content and clarity of presentation. The work may be motivated by problems encountered in pathology and/or oncology and reflect research on algorithms, systems software or databases, or describe novel laboratory applications and any new technologies, or systems impacting informatics. Presenters may employ PowerPoint, multimedia, and/or Internet-based technologies. Awards will be presented on Thursday evening at the Awards Dinner. Authors wishing to participate in the Scientific Session must submit an abstract for inclusion in the published proceedings. Electronic submission is required, and submissions must adhere to formatting guidelines. All accepted abstracts will be published in the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

E-Poster Presentations (abstracts for presentations accepted)
E-poster presentations are similar to traditional poster presentations, but are presented directly from the Internet using a PC. E-posters may take several forms, including a PC-driven PowerPoint presentation, a live demonstration of your Web site, or other Web-based media. We will provide all the necessary hardware (Pentium-based PCs), software (Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer) and connections to the Internet. Macintosh computers are not available for presentations; however, we are open to all presentation formats.

Presenters are eligible for the following awards:

Advancing the Fields of Pathology, Biology, and Oncology through Informatics Technologies (Scientific Session and e-poster)
Recognition will be based on how the presenter's work furthers the field of pathology informatics, oncology informatics or bioinformatics, as well as on content and clarity of presentation. Therefore, presentations may reflect work on a new methodology of information handling, applications development within the laboratory setting or any other topic within the areas of interest. The work may reflect research on algorithms, systems software, or databases, or describe novel laboratory applications and any new technologies or systems impacting informatics. Presenters may employ PowerPoint, multimedia and/ or Internet-based technologies. Judging will be based on content and clarity. Abstracts should explain how this work helps to further the field of informatics.

Best Departmental and Cancer Center Web site (e-poster only)
Recognition will be based on how well the site supports the departmental mission.
This may include such diverse goals as patient education, graduate and medical education, service to the research or clinical community, marketing of in-house expertise, support of the departmental infrastructure, etc. Judging will be based on the depth of content, breadth of mission, overall utility and style. Abstracts should describe how the Web site supports the departmental mission.

Abstracts are required for all Scientific Session and e-poster presentations. All accepted abstracts will be published in Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Abstract forms for both sessions are available online at http://apiii.upmc.edu.
Deadline for all abstract submissions is midnight, September 1, 2004.
