This is the first of a series of papers that AMIA will publish this year. All of these reports are created by AMIA members who are acknowledged experts in the topic under consideration and drafts are reviewed by experts who are not involved in the creation of the report. The AMIA Board has approved the production of these reports to be developed by the AMIA National Office under the direction of the President/CEO Don Detmer and AMIA Editor Elaine Steen and as such they are official AMIA reports. Some reports may be given further approval as representing the official policy of the AMIA Board of Directors. Reports having this designation will be explicitly identified in this regard.
