President's Award Recipients Announced at AMIA 2000

Los Angeles, CA, November 4, 2000 - Patricia Brennan, RN, PhD, President of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), presented four President's Awards at the AMIA 2000 Annual Meeting. The President's Award is given to a member of the association who has performed ongoing significant work on behalf of AMIA. The 2000 recipients included:

Marion J. Ball, EdD in recognition of her outstanding leadership in medical informatics in the United States and internationally. Dr. Ball is Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and a member of the Institute of Medicine.

Bonnie Kaplan, PhD for her recent work in spearheading the formulation of AMIA's Strategic Vision in Consumer Health Informatics as Chair of the People and Organizational Issues Working Group. Dr. Kaplan is President of Kaplan Associates and Lecturer in Medical Informatics at Yale University.

H.C. "Moon" Mullins, MD in recognition of his vision and leadership in shaping the integration of medical informatics and primary care through his work with the newly named AMIA Primary Care Working Group. Dr. Mullins is a Consultant in Medical Informatics at the Crozer Keystone Health System in Philadelphia, PA, and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family Practice at the University of South Alabama.

Edward H. Shortliffe, MD, PhD for his work in advancing the science and application of medical informatics through leading the National Research Council's report, "Networking Health: Prescriptions for the Internet," and for his contributions to the Presidential Information Technology Advisory Committee. Dr. Shortliffe is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Informatics at Columbia University.
