THE AMERICAN MEDICAL INFORMATICS ASSOCIATION HOSTS 24TH ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM: "CONVERGING INFORMATION, TECHNOLOGY, AND HEALTH CARE"
International Leaders and Scholars Gather to Discuss Leading Trends in Medical Information Technology.
Los Angeles, CA, September 21, 2000 - The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) will host its 24th annual symposium, "Converging Information, Technology, and Health Care," November 4-8 at the Los Angeles, California Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites.
This year's symposium will focus on the growing importance of the use of information technology in health care. Major discussion points include HIPAA compliance for confidentiality in electronic medical records, consumer health informatics, privacy issues, and advances in biomedicine. Leaders from all aspects of the field will converge to discuss the major issues and controversies in these areas and to share their latest discoveries and achievements.
The AMIA Annual Symposium is the world's most comprehensive meeting on Health Care Informatics. The 2000 meeting offers more than 250 papers, panels, and system demonstrations focussing on the major conceptual and applied issues in health care informatics today. There are also 200 posters demonstrating recently concluded and in-progress research, system development, and health informatics projects. Additionally, AMIA provides a Technology Exposition, which highlights cutting-edge advances in health systems and services. The Exposition will also provide a section for career development and resume posting.
In coordination with the Annual Symposium, AMIA is offering 36 pre-conference tutorials on November 4-5 ranging from introductions and overviews to advanced instruction on a full range of topics pertaining to the use of information technology in health care.
The keynote speaker for AMIA 2000 is Michael L. Millenson. Mr. Millenson is a principal in the Health Care and Group Benefits practice of William M. Mercer of Chicago, a former reporter for the Chicago Tribune, and author of Demanding Medical Excellence: Doctors and Accountability in the Information Age, published in 1997. He will share his views on the role of information science and quality assurance in medicine in his presentation, "Performance-based Medicine: The Future of Health Care in the Information Age."
