This webinar will provide an overview of mobile health (mHealth) activities within the federal government, with a particular focus on the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health.  This session will discuss trends in mobile health technology adoption, ways the federal government is facilitating the development of mHealth technology, and challenges to the development and scientific evaluation of this technology.

Speakers Information

Dr. Audie Atienza currently serves as a Senior Behavorial Researcher and Program Director at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute.  He previously served as Senior Health Technology Advisor at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Secretary, as well as Senior Advisor for Technology Partnerships in the NIH, Office of the Director.  At HHS, Dr. Atienza led the Text4Health Task Force that provided recommendations on health text messaging/mobile health to the honorable Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (HHS).  He has collaborated with the White House, Office of the U.S. Surgeon General, and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology on various health initiatives and health technology developer challenges (e.g., Apps Against Abuse challenge; U.S. Surgeon General's Healthy App Challenge; Million Hearts Risk Check challenge).  He received his bachelor's degree from the University of California at San Diego (1991) and obtained his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Kent State University (1998). He completed his clinical internship as a Behavioral Medicine intern at the Department of Veteran's Affairs in Palo Alto, CA.  Dr. Atienza was then selected as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford Prevention Research Center.  At NIH, Dr. Atienza has spearheaded national and international conferences addressing electronic health (eHealth) and mobile health (mHealth).  He has over 50 peer-reviewed papers published in scientific journals, and has edited/co-edited several publications focused on technology and health.
