We are pleased to present fellows with an exciting opportunity. The Officer of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) has asked AMIA to coordinate a meeting that will occur a few months prior to our symposium. That meeting will be a follow up on the White Paper on Decision Support for e-prescribing. The aim is to identify key issues and to develop a framework for next steps in the implementation of clinical decision support strategies.

Because the issue of Knowledge Management (KM) is likely to be a central part of that framework, and is also important in wide range of other areas, we are focusing the 2006 College Symposium on Knowledge Management. Knowledge management in its broadest sense will be needed to support the decisions of individual clinicians, as well as national efforts in public health and disaster recovery (e.g., Katrina aftermath). We will have the opportunity to contribute conceptually in this important area. Themes are likely to include:

  • Accelerating New Knowledge Development – How to accelerate the transfer of knowledge from bench to bedside.
  • Knowledge Management – Process and procedure for knowledge acquisition, consensus development, validation, localization, curation, life-cycle management.
  • Implementing knowledge-based clinical systems – process and procedure for using external knowledge sources in clinical information systems.
  • Knowledge Representation and Execution – how to standardize knowledge representation, and create general purpose application programming interfaces to knowledge resources (local and national).
  • Knowledge Management Policies and Procedures – creating sharable knowledge resources, policies for managing risk, culpability and tort, governance issues for a national knowledge resource.

Because this area is a priority for the National Coordinator, this symposium comes at a perfect time to address these issues.
