The 2000 recipient is Jean-Raoul Scherrer, MD, PhD

This special award is made to an individual who has shown leadership and made significant contributions to medical informatics. Charles Safran, MD, will present the ACMI Morris F. Collen Award of Excellence to Jean-Raoul Scherrer, MD, PhD.

Emeritus Professor Jean-Raoul Scherrer's long and distinguished career in medical informatics spans over four decades. In 1959, Dr. Scherrer received his MD from the Geneva University Medical School. He became laureate of the faculty for his doctorate thesis in 1965. From 1967 to 1970 he was collaborator in research in medical physics at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York and on research projects within the Department of Anaesthetics at Columbia University, New York.

In 1971, Dr. Scherrer became lecturer in medical informatics at the Geneva University Medical School and a full Professor in 1979. In 1971 he led a major hospital informatics system development in Geneva called "DIOGENE." Professor Scherrer was nominated Director of Geneva University Hospital's computer center where he lead the migration from the former star network system of the early 1970s into the full migration onto a distributed architecture in 1995.

In 1984 he founded the Swiss Society for Medical Informatics (SSMI). Dr. Scherrer became executive vice president of IMIA in charge of Working Groups and Special Interest Groups (1993-1996) and executive president of European Federation of Medical Informatics (EFMI) from 1996-1998.

In 1995-96 with the help of the Ministry of Health of the Geneva Dr. Scherrer created Health On the Net Foundation (HON) where became president upon his retirement in 1998. In addition to this long career in medical informatics and medicine he is author of more than 300 scientific publications.
