1. SCIMETRIKA, LLC, ATLANTA, GA 2010-PRESENT
MEDICAL EPIDEMIOLOGIST & PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICIAN
- Full time contractor working on a wide range of projects for the CDC including Environmental and Disaster Epidemiology, Public Health Informatics, and Limited-Scale Radiation Exercises.
- Develop assessment interview tools consistent with a minimum set of standards.
- Provide advice and assistance in the development and implementation of procedures, methods and strategies for obtaining and using scientific data in various types of environmental epidemiological studies.
- Collaborate on the presentation, publication, and dissemination of research findings in environmental epidemiology and public health informatics projects.
- Identify new opportunities for the development of public health informatics initiatives applicable to current and future projects and programs.
KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Integrated and interpreted large data sets for the identification of inadequacies and inconsistencies in data for three large projects; data dictionaries and metadata were also created to ensure that accurate data sharing and subsequent analysis will be possible in the future.
- Designed databases, developed data collection tools, and provided epidemiologic analysis support to HSB’s EIS officers and subject matter experts assigned to emergency response activities; these databases and data collection tools have been used by Public Health personnel from five State Health Departments.
- Developed a public health information system composed of a set of databases and electronic versions of radiation epidemiologic questionnaires and question makes using MS Access and EpiInfo 7; these tools are available for future use in preparedness and response activities.
- Designed and presented a proposal at the CDC Symposium on Climate and health that conceptualizes a data architecture component for a single electric data repository for ciguatera-related data in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Served as a member of the objective review panel that conducts evaluations of applications submitted by national and international candidates for positions at the CDC Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program.
- Participated as Project Manager and Liaison between HSB, Florida Department of Health, East Florida Regional Planning Council, and SciMetrika LLC to design, execute, and evaluate the activation and operation of a Community Reception Center in a limited-scale radiation drill in Orlando, FL.
2. CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION, ENVIRONMENTAL PUBLIC HEALTH TRACKING BRANCH, ATLANTA, GA 2008-2010
PUBLIC HEALTH INFORMATICS FELLOW
- Served on the CDC’s Environmental Public Health Tracking Program, whose purpose is to provide information from a nationwide network of integrated health and environmental data that drives public health action.
- Worked on several projects including the Tracking Network, Local Climate Change Tracking System, Disaster Epidemiology and Emergency Response, and User Requirements for an HER at the Bureau of Tuberculosis – New York City Department of Health and Mental Health.
- Provided data standardization, management, and scientific assistance to the Informatics and Science teams at the Environmental Public Health Tracking Branch.
- Identified different approaches for the development of public health informatics initiatives that potentially benefit Tracking Network and partners.
KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Led the process to conceptualize a core set of technical, functional, and data specifications for the development of a computerized scientific publications retrieval tool.
- Supported data testing and functionality to launch the Tracking Network Public Portal.
- Collaborated with other Tracking Branch members to define and write technical documentation for Science Team and the Metadata subgroup.
- Represented Environmental Health Tracking Branch as spokesperson for Spanish-speaking media.
- Served as a contract technical evaluator of several proposals to develop an information retrieval system for CDC National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities.
- Assisted CDC’s Climate Change Program in defining and proposing a set of recommendations to organize and display vulnerability and health indicators for the City of Austin’s local Climate Change Tracking System using the Geospatial Emergency Management Support System (GEMSS).
- Assisted CDC Emergency Operations Center – Epidemiology and Surveillance team in identifying health data issues/problems, analyzing trends, and summarizing information from sentinel surveillance systems to be displayed on Haiti maps, providing valuable information about the state of post-earthquake health conditions in the affected population.
3. MINISTRY OF SOCIAL PROTECTION OF COLOMBIA (OF HEALTH), INTEGRAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR THE SOCIAL PROTECTION (SISPRO), BOGOTA, COLOMBIA 2006-2007
MEDICAL EPIDEMIOLOGIST
- Led epidemiologic and technical efforts to analyze large data sets and consolidate health statistics collected by different national health institutions in order to elaborate thematic national and subnational health maps.
- Identified, selected, and compiled data collected by national level institutions on five components: demographics, socioeconomic indicators, health status, health insurance, and health services utilization.
KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Collaborated with colleagues at the National Geographic Institute of Colombia to identify the most appropriate visualization standards to optimize interpretation of data provided in health maps.
- Developed the Colombian Health Atlas proposal, statistical analysis, and a methodological guide for users.
