Assistant/Associate Professors--Public Health Informatics
Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
The School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, invites applications for three positions in Public Health Informatics (PHI) at the tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor or the tenured Associate Professor levels. These individuals will be active in conducting PHI related research and teaching in a new MPH in Public Health Informatics (PHI) program. Successful candidates will have informatics related skills and experience in research and teaching needed to integrate information sciences and technology in public health practice and research. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate how they will help improve population health by developing and implementing public health information systems such as surveillance systems, regional health information networks for monitoring public health, or web-based health education and promotion. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate their ability to develop partnerships and collaborations within the University of Minnesota, with state organizations, such as the Minnesota Department of Health, and with private organizations.
This is an open search across a variety of content areas and we encourage applicants from a variety of backgrounds. We seek individuals who wish to apply their expertise in areas such as informatics, human computer interaction, social computing, data warehousing, biostatistics, management information systems, and industrial engineering to improve population health. We anticipate that the successful candidates will reflect a diversity of content areas and interests in Public Health and be able to develop strong collaborations within and beyond the School of Public Health that link PHI and public health content areas. For example, the appointees in these positions may have the opportunity to collaborate in integrating PHI with food safety surveillance and response, large data sets of environmental exposure and health effects, online HIV/STI interventions, regional health information networks, syndrome surveillance, and health care quality measurement and public reporting. Alternatively, we welcome candidates who bring new areas to strengthen our breadth of study. In addition to working within their content areas, the candidates are charged with developing a strong informatics core.
Required qualifications: The core requirement for these positions is a strong interest in population health and contributing to the successful development of the Minnesota PHI program through research and education and a background in an informatics related area. Specific requirements for all candidates are (1) formal training in an informatics or a related area, signified with a degree such as a PhD in computer science, health informatics, or PHI, an MD with a masters in health informatics or PHI, or a closely related degree (e.g., PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, MIS, industrial engineering, or psychology with a strong informatics and data management focus); (2) a research and teaching focus on informatics related to public and population health; (3) strong research skills with a relevant publication record in peer-reviewed journals; (4) indication of the potential for obtaining research funding; (5) teaching experience at the graduate or undergraduate level; and (6) ability and willingness to teach core PHI courses, such as systems analysis, relational data theory, and public health information systems. Appointment at the Associate Professor level requires clear and demonstrable evidence that the candidate has developed a program of innovative and of high quality teaching and scholarly activity related to PHI and a national reputation that is clearly related to PHI.
