The American Medical Informatics Association requests nominations for the AMIA New Investigator Award, the Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award, the Don Eugene Detmer Award for Health Policy Contributions in Informatics, and the Donald A.B. Lindberg Award for Innovation in Informatics. These awards are part of the AMIA Signature Awards program designed to highlight individuals whose work has embodied the innovative spirit of informatics and created lasting effects by transforming both the health care system and biomedical research. AMIA Signature Awards provide a path of recognition for the immeasurable talent its membership holds by showcasing their rich history of achievement. AMIA encourages the nomination of worthy candidates for the signature awards described below.
AMIA New Investigator Award
This award recognizes an individual for early informatics contributions and significant scholarly contributions on the basis of scientific merit and research excellence. The criteria are:
- Significant scientific productivity in informatics prior to reaching eligibility for fellowship in the American College of Medical Informatics.
- Multiple significant scientific publications including contributions to journals including and other than JAMIA.
- Demonstrated commitment to AMIA through membership, presentations at AMIA conferences, and/or publications in JAMIA.
Selection is determined by AMIA Executive Awards Committee (AEC) with endorsement by the AMIA Board of Directors. Nominators should submit a personalized letter of recommendation and curriculum vitae for the candidate as described below. Past recipients include: Kai Zheng, PhD, in 2011, Adam Wright, PhD, in 2010, S. Trent Rosenbloom, MD, MPH, in 2009, Atul J. Butte, MD, PhD, in 2008, David A. Dorr, MD, MS, in 2007, Mia K. Markey, PhD, in 2006, and Mor Peleg, PhD, 2005.
Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award
This award recognizes an individual’s distinguished career and significant impact on the care of patients and the discipline of nursing. The Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award honors a professional with exemplary principles and practices and a substantial record of contribution to the field of nursing informatics. The criteria are:
- Focus in Nursing Informatics.
- Characteristics and achievements should include visionary leadership; global impact; and enduring contribution to nursing professional practice, education, administration, research, and/or health policy.
- Demonstrated commitment to AMIA through membership.
Selection is determined by the AEC with contribution and voting privilege from the AMIA NIWG Awards Committee Chair and the immediate AMIA NIWG Past-chair, with endorsement by the AMIA Board of Directors. Nominators should submit a personalized letter of recommendation for the candidate as described below. Past recipients include: Rita Zielstorff RN, MS, FAAN,FACMI, in 2011, Judith G. Ozbolt, PhD, RN, in 2010, Connie Delaney, RN, PhD in 2009, Elizabeth (Betsy) Weiner, PhD, RN, in 2008, Susan J. Grobe, PhD, RN, in 2007, Suzanne Bakken, RN, DNSc, in 2006 and Virginia K. Saba, EdD, RN, in 2005.
Don Eugene Detmer Award for Health Policy Contributions in Informatics
Don Detmer's tenure as President and CEO of AMIA marked the beginning of a dramatic transformation for the organization and its standing in the greater health care community. Yet his commitment to advancing informatics’ causes and the profession began long before he assumed his leadership role at AMIA. This award will recognize an individual that has made a significant singular contribution or series of contributions over the course of a career exemplifying the expertise, passion, and spirit that Dr. Detmer has for health policy. The criteria are:
- Awarded to an individual at any stage of a career for contribution(s) to health policy in biomedical and health informatics.
- Contribution(s) should be conducted in accordance with the philosophy that all citizens and populations deserve a state-of-the-art health system that provides safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable health care services.
- Characteristics and achievements of the recipient should include one or more of the following accomplishments: Visionary leadership in the health policy realm; Action-oriented advocacy work producing a regional, national or global result; and Advancement to the domain health policy though-leadership generating a sustainable contribution to the health system
- Demonstrated commitment to AMIA through membership and/or support of the organization’s mission by acting as a strong advocate for biomedical and health informatics in the public policy arena.
Selection is determined by AMIA Executive Awards Committee (AEC) with endorsement by the AMIA Board of Directors when deserved, and not more than once annually. Nominators should submit a personalized letter of recommendation describing the nominees key contributions in the health policy arena as it relates to informatics. Past recipients include: Julie McGowan, PhD, in 2011, David W. Bates, MD, MSc, in 2010, Paul C. Tang, MD, MS, in 2009, Don E. Detmer, MD, MA, in 2008.
Donald A.B. Lindberg Award for Innovation in Informatics
Dr. Lindberg's continuous commitment to the field has dramatically altered the scope and extent of informatics' practice and research. The contribution recognized will have advanced the field for example in the form of a significant innovation or a unique approach and contribution to education or training, but not for a lifetime body of work. The criteria are:
- Awarded to an individual at any stage of a career for a specific technological, research, or educational contribution that advances biomedical informatics.
- Work leading to a winner of this award will have been conducted in a not-for-profit setting.
- Adoption of the particular advance by the informatics community will be on a national or international level.
- Scope of a successful innovation of informatics has dramatically moved or changed the field.
- Demonstrated commitment to AMIA through membership.
Selection is determined by AMIA Executive Awards Committee (AEC) with endorsement by the AMIA Board of Directors. Nominators should submit a personalized letter of recommendation for the candidate as described below. Past recipients include: 2011 - R. Scott Evans, MS, PhD, FACMI, in 2011, Carol Friedman, PhD, in 2010, Isaac (Zak) S. Kohane, MD, PhD, in 2009, William R. Hersh, MD, in 2008, Randolph A. Miller, MD, in 2007, Mark A. Musen, MD, PhD, in 2006, and William W. Stead, MD, in 2005.
Nomination Instructions
We ask that nominators submit only one nomination letter per candidate, however more than one individual can co-sign a nomination letter when appropriate. Nominations should be submitted to Jeff Williamson, AMIA Vice President of Education and Academic Affairs, by e-mail to jeff@amia.org by Wednesday, July 12, 2012. Award winners will be announced prior to the AMIA 2012 Annual Symposium. For the AMIA New Investigator Award nominators should submit a personalized letter of recommendation describing their early informatics contributions and curriculum vitae. For the Saba, Detmer, and Lindberg Awards nominators should submit a personalized letter of recommendation for the candidate describing the nominees key contributions in informatics based on the criteria for each award.
