Judith J. Warren, PhD, RN, BC, FAAN, FACMI

Judith J. Warren, PhD, RN, BC, FAAN, FACMI is the Christine A. Hartley Centennial Professor of Nursing and Assistant Director of the Frontiers Heartland Institute of Clinical and Translational Research’s Center for Biomedical Informatics. She developed, in partnership with Cerner Corporation, the Simulated E-hEalth Delivery System (SEEDS) that adapting electronic health record software to teach students how to analyze data from virtual patient case studies, simulations, and clinical experiences while developing informatics competencies. This program is now used in over 70 schools of nursing and health professions. She developed, implemented and directed three graduate programs in informatics at KU: MS in Nursing Informatics, Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) in with a Nursing Informatics focus, and an interprofessional MS in Health informatics.
Dr. Warren is the first nurse to be appointed to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS), an advisory body to the Secretary of the U.S. Department on Health and Human Services on health data, statistics and national health information policy. During her two appointed terms she has served as a co-chair of its Standards Subcommittee and as a member of the Executive Subcommittee and Quality Subcommittee. In 2012 she was appointed to the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) Health Information Technology Advisory Committee. Dr. Warren is a past co-chair of HL7's Patient Care Technical Committee, an informatics standards development organization. She was appointed for two terms the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organization’s (IHTSDO) Quality Assurance Committee and participates in the Nursing Special Interest Group IHTSDO develops and disseminates SNOMED CT, a leading multidisciplinary standardized terminology.
Dr. Warren consults with National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) on transitioning their quality indicators to the new format of eMeasures required by NQF for endorsement. All Magnet designated hospitals must submit data to this quality and benchmarking service. Dr. Warren was a founding member of the American Nurses Association’s Tipping Point group concerned with advancing nursing knowledge representation in EHRs. She is a member of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) faculty and a consultant to Technology and Informatics Guiding Educational Reform (TIGER) Initiative. Dr. Warren is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American College of Medical Informatics, the American Heart Association, and NANDA International. She has taught, published, and conducted research in nursing informatics since 1988. She is an ANCC certified Informatics Nurse.
