How do I describe my work to those outside the field?

I describe with a vision statement of our department, which is unleashing the potential for electronic biomedical information to improve health.

Years of experience …

30 years. I started working as a software consultant on biomedical applications in the early 80s

Why informatics?

It’s a way of combining a love of and gift for computing with the desire to benefit or contribute beneficially to society.

What are your ambitions? At the end of your career, what do you hope to have accomplished?

My hope is to have contributed substantially to the training of the next generation of informatics researchers and practitioners. To have made some contributions both at the foundational and applied level in informatics that have a beneficial health impact. To have helped bridge academic informatics with informatics service activities. And somehow to do both at a personal, individual personal level and also at an organization level as academic leader.

What or who are your key sources in the informatics field?

Fellow academic leaders, division heads, department chairs, center directors in the academic informatics community, virtually all of whom are members of AMIA. Some of the members of ACME. The leading informatics journals including AMIA and JBI where I serve on the editorial board. And obviously national and international informatics conferences, including, of course AMIA’s conference. The conferences, AMIA’s in particular, provide an opportunity for me to meet a large number of my peers in person.

I served on the AMIA finance committee, as chair of the genomics working group. I served as a member of the American College of Medical Informatics, or ACMI executive committee.  ACMI is the honorary society that is part of AMIA. I am currently as a member of the ACMI nominations committee.
