George Hripcsak, MD, MS, FACMI

George Hripcsak is Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Informatics at Columbia University. He received his BS, summa cum laude, from Haverford College and his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York.

Dr. Hripcsak was the lead designer of the Arden Syntax, a language for representing medical rules that was derived from the HELP and Regenstrief clinical systems. He designed and implemented the automated decision-support system currently in use at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Hripcsak's current work is in applying automated decision support to several domains. He is principal investigator on a US Department of Commerce grant to use automated decision support and wireless telecommunications to coordinate health care among a medical center, a city department of health, and a visiting nurse service. He is investigating ways improve the retrieval of data for decision-support, including the use of natural language processing, and ways to improve the delivery of clinical alerts to the appropriate providers.

Dr. Hripcsak served as the program chair for the 1995 AMIA Spring Congress on "Capturing the Clinical Encounter." He is chair of the Arden Syntax task group within the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha.
